Mitsubishi Outlander break-in / OCI question

Hello, My pal has just purchased a new 2011 Mitsubishi Outlander SE 2.4 liter 4 cyl. w/CVT. The OCI is 7.5K. 0W-20 is the spec'd oil. He's concerned over the fact that the engine will break in over the coming Winter with his wife starting each day with a ridiculously short (not 2 mile) commute. The only thing I could think of was to change the factory fill at the half way point. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to guess. Kira

I think the first oil change at ~ 3,000 is a good idea. I would also encourage them to try to take a highway trip of 10+ miles minimum every week. Does the owners manual have a "Severe and Normal" driving cycle? If so, I would certainly follow the severe with the short drives.

new cars are broken in by 100, 200, or maybe 300 mi.,depending on which reports you read.you'll hear differing opinions on the early vs not early oci issue.
this subject must have had about 15 threads so far this year. i guess that's why, as of a few minutes ago,there was only 1 reply of 55 views. the search function can't be so bad that people won't use it. oh,well.i have some time to kill -- otherwise i would not have replied. take care.

Change your oil more frequently because of the short cold trips.
Don't worry about break in. It will happen eventually.
And get her out on the highway here and there.
