I wonder what would be the minimum hose diameter since it seems to be unnecessary to buy a large diameter if there is an orifice of 1/16".
Am I wrong to think that an hose of 1/8" would be just fine? Is it not possible if you have a long hose with 1/8" to leave out the orifice since the pressure reduction is done by this thin hose?

What about the maximum temperature a hose for bypas filer has to withstand? Since this is outside application of the engine, probably 230°F temperature durability would be also enough?

pressure durability of the hose:
145PSI is enough ?

thanks a lot

I think that it's not practical to use smaller diameter line then 3/8 or 5/16. You can do it ..but why bother

The orifice is not for pressure reduction. It's for flow restriction. If we're talking TP here ..the orifice is usually (or frequently) removed if it's being returned to the main oil flow via a Permacool sandwich. In that the environment it is self regulating to 2 psid. There you aren't dealing with 60 psi (or whatever) and a ZERO return drain.

The cheapest hose with the best rating is trans cooler line hose. Good for about 300F ..very reasonable in 6ft lengths (prepackaged) at NAPA.

So, sure, you can use smaller line, but it will probably be more expensive to plumb before you are done. Your hose barbs get pretty thin for that line ..and if you go rigid line (like brake lines) it will be pretty hard to fab compared to flexible stuff. Now if you happen to have a supply of 1/8" tubing that's rated @ 230F and 145 psi ..then use it. It's not the underhood temp that you need to worry about (much). It's the temp of the pressurized fluid inside the tube. So, unless you're dealing with oil temps in excess of that, at pressure, you're okay

One fourth inch is the common size for TP filters including the Motor Guard. When you use smaller hose you have to consider oil temperature, weather and oil viscosity and how far from the engine the filter is. I would stick with 1/4" or larger. I would leave in the orifice unless you are using the filter for fuel. The orifice isn't needed with a sandwich adapter with the two ports for supply and return because you aren't taking oil off the system. You are getting into a bundle of worms with hose. Some 300 F hose won't last as long as some 200 F hose. I have seen hose last for 20 years and I have seen some last for a few months. I use 300 F nylon hydraulic hose. I have used several brands of hose.
It isn't unusual for some oils to run over 250 F. Like someone tied up in traffic with the air conditioner on in Dallas Texas in July. I can't assume that every one has a good cooling system. The first thing some cars need even when new is a good oil cooler.
