Microgard Select vs Purolator One/Boss - Which better suits my situation?

Hello all. Relative newbie and non expert here with some earnest questions about my oil change routine going forward. My car is a 2014 V6 Accord coupe with just 24,000 miles on it and in very good condition. It's a manual transmission vehicle so thankfully it's not burdened with any of the Honda V6 negatives like direct injection or VCM. I like the car a lot and plan to own it for a long time, so I'm looking to upgrade my oil/filter routine a bit beyond my current Kirkland 0w20/Fram Endurance regimen.

In researching, I've decided to switch from my 0w20 Kirkland to the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 5w30. I'm fully aware that the oil cap says 0w20 on it, but I'm convinced that my Honda can run well on a wide range of viscosities, and I must confess that I enjoy visiting high RPM's pretty often in this entertaining little car. As I see it, a little extra protection over the long term can't be a bad thing.

The oil filter is positioned where it makes quite a mess when being changed, so my plan is to go with 5,000 mile oil changes and 10,000 mile filter changes. I like how well designed and built the Microgard Select seems, but its advertised lifespan is 10,0000 miles. Should I be concerned taking the filter change interval right up to the edge like that? If so, I'd probably go with the Purolator One or the Boss as they have longer lifespans.

Very open to suggestions/criticism and appreciative of any feedback from the pundits on here

Depends on what your filter efficiency target is, as that will separate some filters from the others.

My understanding is you generally need to sacrifice efficiency to gain capacity, and if I'm going to carry over the filter for two OCI's then I'm going to lose out on some efficiency. Maybe the Purolator One would be good in that sense as I understand it has better efficiency than the Boss.

with a clean engine, the microgard/carquest premium/premium guard XL will be fine over a long run. mileage ratings are superficial numbers with plenty of other contributing factors

It depends on the filter. For instance, the OG Ultra and Titanium were high efficiency and high holding capacity. The Fram Endurance is in the same boat as those, but people don't like the "ruffles" leaf spring thing going on with them right now.

What's wrong with the Fram Endurance? That is a very good filter :D

The PH7317 is the A02, and Honda says to only change the filter every other OCI, and the minder can suggest a long OCI. Since you don't have DI or VCM, it should be very easy on oil, so just pick out whatever synthetic is on sale.

Careful with that kind of talk LOL. Keeping things simple and not overthinking things is frowned upon in these forums from what I've seen.

Seriously though, mildly concerned by how many people bag on Fram filters with the wavy pleats or whatever. Oil wise I don't mind spending an extra $20 a year or so to put in a premium oil, and PUP seems like a good fit for my car.

I’ve seen some c&p’s around with over 10k on PG made filters like the Microgard Select and they looked great! I’d be 100% comfortable running them to the recommended 10k. If you do decide to go the Purolator route just make sure the louvers are open and formed well. Endurance is a no go for me especially on a longer oci until QC is in check.

Thanks went ahead and bought a Microgard Select good easy option as I have an O'Reilly's near me.

You should cut open some filters and see how much they are trapping. I think the worry on here about capacity is overblown, even on my old Sienna "sludge monster" with nearly a half million miles there is very little in the pleats after a 7000 mile OCI.

If you have some sort of mechanical defect that will load up a filter it may be more of a concern. But if you've taken care of the engine I really don't think capacity is a big deal.

Also with a synthetic media is the efficiency vs. capacity thing even a concern?

Could be with some filters that have high holding capacity (touted as a high mileage filter) and low efficiency, if efficiency is important to the user.

Yeah that was my rationale for choosing the microgard select over the Boss. Boss has high capacity low efficiency. Fram Endurance good on paper but read enough about quality control issues with them to go another direction.
