I had seen a lot of positive post about these filters lately so I picked one up and I started looking at it. I noticed on the inside of the media around the bypass valve there is all kinds of brown sealant is my guess at the end cap. This seems to be typical of these filters so I’m sure it’s normal but does this cause anyone else concern that if any of this softened up broke loose, etc. would head straight to the engine. I typically had used wix or AC Delco but thought I’d give this a shot for a few dollars less on an O’Reillys oil change special.

well you are definitely stepping up from a Delco or Wix IMO... I have seen the light colored glue at the bottom on every Microgard Select filter fwir but you can look at many cut opens below and check the quality yourself if you see anything coming loose.

While there has not been any cases that I am aware of with the glue coming loose it is something that could be problematic, there is always the possibility of a poor bond between the glue and surface and there is always the possibility that quality control on a specific batch could be bad and slip through.

I also remember a while back someone had rust issues around the seam/crimp of the filter and recently another person also posted about rust similarly on these filters so that may be concerning in the rust belt.

Me personally I am just sticking to OEM AC Delco and Toyota filters for my vehicles.

These are from the same factories as the Microgard Selects : https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/s...]=1&c[nodes][0]=6&c[title_only]=1&o=relevance

Some ACdelco are just basic champ filters .. they could be a good product but they have leaking leaf springs from what others have documented on this forum and I don't know what makes them worth more than $5 with average media and nitrile adbv. Here are some recent ones :

Here is what Wix puts out now :

I understand your concerns.

The potting glue used by PGI is extremely strong and is there by design. We have yet to see any break loose.

The crimp is unpainted and will get surface rust.

Lots of oil filters have a glue seam around the end of the center tube on the dome end. Only filter I've seen that sheds glue is the Motorcrafts. I've never seen any filter beside the Motorcraft what will shed glue while in service. As already mentioned, the glue in the MicroGard Selects and similar made filters don't have any glue denigration in service. Even taking a used filter and trying to chip that glue off will be a chore.
