Greetings to the collective. Just finished an oil change on a 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.6 and when I took the oil filter cap off the filter was loose (not secured to the cap) in the housing. This is the third time this has happened to me with this number and brand of filter on three different cars (others were a 2021 JGC and a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan.

I don't think it's a problem with filtering as they're secure in the base of the housing via the o-ring, but I think I'm going to move on from this brand in the future. That's a shame as I really like this brand of filters.

Comments and advice appreciated.

Here are the proper measurements of the Pentastar filter. A member of the JL Wrangler forum made this. We are finding some filters are to long and get crushed, so others may be too short. I have been using Carquest Premium and EP filters with no problems.

Usually, there's a circular protrusion in the cap which protrudes into the filter itself. I've never had a problem with any Microgard Select while using it in my Hyundai.

I've had 3.6's for a long time. Changed oil a lot. I've had some filters that have done what yours did, most stayed "clicked" on. The pressure of the bypass spring in the cap will keep the oil filter sealed against the cap and the bottom of housing. I've never worried about it. You're right some filters are a tad too long OR a tad too short. When the cap is tightened down though they all seal.

Interesting. I've also had some a tad too long and as a result, come out twisted. I used to see that regularly with the old style Pentastar filter (the ones that went over the tower in the housing). Maybe the MicroGard Select are too short, and under pressure they're dislodged from the cap?

Thanks for the Carquest recommendation. I'll look into those.

To satisfy my curiosity, I pulled the old filter out of the trash and took some measurements:
Filter media length, 4 3/4; overall length, 6 1/4; overall diameter 2"; center hole diameter 1".
Practically no difference from the measurements Glenda W posted, so I doubt my theory of being too short makes sense.

Think I'll just move on to the Carquest and call it a day.

Interesting. I’m not sure what else you would make it loose?
