I just purchased an MSL10010 for one of my 3.6's. I noticed that the center tube and the bottom end with the small O-ring spin inside, free of the media. None of the filters I've ever used on these engines ever did that.

What's the thinking here and is it a good idea?

I can, but it doesn’t look any different than any other filter. A video would show show it, but I’m not familiar with posting videos here.

In the meantime, Grok scoured the web (including BITOG) and concluded I was a recent design feature of more expensive Pentastar filters to prevent media twisting. So, I guess it’s good.

Appreciate the reply.

Good find. I don't think there is a way to post videos here. I tried once, and you can upload them to a service, (y'know, like Utube) and provide a link here, but that's as far as I got with it.

So this sounds like a cartridge filter and not a spin-on. Yes, no video uploads allowed here ... as mentioned you'd have to upload to YouTube or similar and provide a link to it there.

The MOPAR MO-349 oil filter starting with REV AB and subsequent had the center cage spinning free of the outer media shell. Suppose to help with preventing twisting of the media when installing.

Some of the aftermarket, especially WIX and a few others when they copied and made their own cross reference filter, copied the non spinning center cage early design.

Is that revision very recent? I purchased two MO-349's from a dealership just last fall. Neither one had the spinning center cage.

At least for the last 8+ years I know of. Do not not know what to tell you about what you bought just that they can be stiff and notchy sometimes. Not a defect if center cage spins and is preferred.
