I went to O'Reilly today to spend the gift card I got from the NextGen deal on some Castrol so I can get that rebate, too.

I have a Microgard 3980 on my Savana van right now, and it's a Fram. The Microgard 3980 on the shelf at the O'Reilly was an Ecore. Even though my van specs the PF47, which crosses to a PH3387A, I usually use the PF-52-size filter which fits fine on my vehicle. So I looked at the Microgard 3347, and it was an Ecore also. So I paid a few cents more to "upgrade" to the actual Fram, since I don't use Ecores any more.

Upgrade to FRAM ... what's the world coming to? J/K.

I stay far away from any ecore filter.

I think people's fears on Bitog about ecores are overblown.

I wonder if this is due to Fram and Champ now being under the same ownership? Perhaps they're starting to merge the catalogs?

I tend to agree with you. I have used several ecores without issue mostly the PF61E from Walmart running them out to 13k by the GM olm. I prefer a bit better filter but will use them if needed and not be concerned.

I tend to conditionally agree with you about the E-cores being overblown with a bunch of "ifs".
For the record, I will use them. But I won't use them IF it's a high RPM engine. I'll won't use them IF the engine needs a silicone ADBV. I won't use them in a vehicle IF it has a thick oil in the crankcase. (A cold, thick oil hitting the pleats can break them, IMO) I guess I won't go out of my way to buy them any longer, but if they come with an oil deal, I'll take it.
Pretty sure the new E-Core Microgards are in my local O'Reillys. I think they are the ones in the generic white box, correct?

If one has viewed the pics of the blown out, or in, holes in media pics posted here, it may give one pause. Also, another ecore factor besides the open cage, is the nitrile combo valve design which seems to have some reliability/durabilty issues. And IMO, may well be a factor in the media breach pics posted here.

As for the topic, from the sounds of the OP's post, it seems to be that the newest MG may be following the new Wally TLE Fram Ecore posted here previously. In other words, if possible, an even cheaper designed MG 'black can'. And I agree, upgrading to an orange can? Dang. The combining of Champ and Fram under Rank is definitely the reason.

The first one I looked at was in the white box. However, the second Ecore (PF47 equivalent) was in the red and black box.

I have used 20+ Ecore in the past 6 years and everyone that were cut open looks fine. If I had one failed I might rethink of using it. However I don't know the whole story of why someone else would have one fail. It could be the engine or a bad filter itself or there was coolant in the oil. I had a P1 fail on me once and I've been staying away from them. If I showed you that I had few P1 fail would you not use them anymore?

^^^^Congrats to you on your ecore success, other members here have not been a lucky, eg,. search webfors filters pics as posted here many times. And the very recent ACDelco oil filter thread with similar pics currently on this page. Factually, it may give one pause. Apparently the OP and others on this thread agree.

And the ecore design is an even cheaper design than the previous MG design with a different adbv bypass combo valve design. And that was the primary portion on my post, not quoted.

I'm betting the failure didn't lead itself to causing chunks of media going into the engine's oiling system like a failed Ecore can lead to. That's the main issue with an Ecore media blowout failure ... it can go directly into the engine and clog up oil passages, etc.

I had a Purolator Classic with some tore media, but because the metal center tube had lots of small holes in it, that prevented the media from totally blowing out and going into the engine.
