I have a casual wedding on a ship coming up.

What are the rules of a vest?

I was thinking grey dress slacks, black vest, white shirt, and tie (maroon) to match wife's dress?

I'm not super fashionable but like to look nice and not like a confused hipster.

The vest isn't part of a three piece, I only have two piece suits.

I figured with the weather, boat, casual atmosphere, any jacket would be off right away so I was just going to skip the jacket all together.
 
I always overdress for events like that. Rather be over than under. You can skip the vest and go with a shirt and tie then. If I was going I would do no tie and pants with a jacket. Def. in style now and comfortable
 
Certainly no expert, but the bride and groom should provide some clues as to what their expectations are. Here is what one couple provided as guidance (Florida wedding, late summer):
The Wedding: dressy

If you are in the wedding party, you already know what you’ll be wearing.
For everyone else, please dress nicely and maybe a little fancy
– for men that means a dress shirt, slacks, and a tie.
– for women a dress or nice pants outfit.

In absence of guidance and considering it is summer and hot, this is what I would do. Vest optional. Tie can always be taken off later or if you are the only one wearing one. I would probably wear a shirt with color or pattern, because I don't like white shirts. Also lends to a casual no-tie look if needed.
 
If a member of the wedding party and thats the selected outfit - then you wear a vest.

All other attendees outside of the father of the Groom or Bride are not obligated to 3 piece.

Unless you happen to have a monocle with a chain going into the front pocket of the jacket I'd skip the vest.

I personally don't go to a wedding with out a jacket. I would wear a nice shirt that looks good if you take the jacket off.
 
You could wear that but I'm not really down with the tie to match the wife's dress unless there is some gray or black in the tie to coordinate with your clothes. Also grey and black are not summer colors but you could do it. Myself, I'd go gray slacks, a bright colored shirt like maroon with a light colored vest or jacket and skip the tie.
 
I'll share this with you before I patent it.

GET A BOLLA. It's a stone, a stone with a surround or jewelry on a leather rope with silver tips.

Wear a single colored shirt (pale blue is a CAN'T MISS). Jacket OR sweater OR just shirt and boll.

Saw a guy at a wedding with a plain black stone (polished marble perhaps-really doesn't matter) and he looked FANTASTIC.

People are still talking about it. Get a good (6 ply) leather rope rather than a cheap 4 ply.

Original, fresh, dressy, ageless. While a bow tie is great they can look goofy. Who needs another stupid necktie.

Wear a nice, tailored navy suit with a conservative tie and a set of cufflinks if you want to stand out. This is about the bride/groom, not you.

Id skip the vest unless I was wearing a jacket. Shirt and tie and bring a jacket just in case.

I spoke to the groom regarding the wedding parties dress.

It's going to be a party, and want everyone to be casual and comfortable.

Casual summer for wedding guest on a boat: navy blue cotton suit or blazer with coordinating chinos, short sleeve button down shirt, club tie, deck shoes or loafers.

What you described sounds like a great outfit. I've seen guys wear a vest as you describe and it looks good. Considering it is a "Casual wedding" you may be overdressed but you can simply remove the vest and tie if you feel uncomfortable.
 
You have 2 options IMO. Either dress like you are running for the Republican Presidential Nominator or Captain Obvious from the hotels.com commercials. You can't lose either way.

and are rarely stressed out before their wedding haha
