I think that's a Denso 673-2302. Same part goes in my wife's 2002 Civic, except maybe not melted like this one.

Anyone know if they should be replaced as regular maintenance like we used to do with plug wires? Besides costing about $50 each, I'm not sure there's any reason they couldn't be replaced.

The MDX has direct ignition, and that's a direct ignition coil. Like I said, probably Denso 673-2302.

And the plug is pretty messed up. It looks like the ground electrode is completely gone, although it's not clear if it melted or just broke off. I have the feeling it might have still sparked occasionally. The coil might still be working to some degree, although it's pretty obviously gone. Probably misfired a bunch of times and then boom!

It appears that the spark plug boot did melt, but a significant portion of the plug body is clearly missing as well. A lot of the plug insulator is exposed because the plug threads, and then some, are gone.

agree to disagree

I looks to me that the plug was damaged first, which led to melting down the coil.

The ignition coils can suddenly fail, as two did at exactly the same time on my '01 CL with ~110k, so be ready. I replaced all six with Airtex/Wells from rockauto, as, for once, I didn't want OEM again...

I will go back to what I said earlier; if the picture of the melted plug and coil pack is what happened to the vehicle in question here, it's likely an issue of either the plug getting loose in the cylinder head, or possibly replacement plugs not being torqued correctly. To the original poster, do you know if the plugs are original or if previous work had been done to this engine?

I asked but they weren't certain if the plugs were replaced at the prescribed interval. The vehicle has over 100k miles on it for sure.

Come on, we are talking about some third hand (or fourth hand) information here! Besides, how many of here would believe *anything* coming from the mouth of a dealer?
