McDonalds

There are actually a few "mom and pop" restaurants in my area that make better burgers than the chains for less $$. That's usually where I head when I want a hamburger. Although, occasionally, I do get a craving for Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun.

Wife and I both had double cheeseburgers tonight. We both remarked how good they were. McDonalds uses Fresh Beef supposedly only for their Quarter Pounder. But these were really good. Although we eat there frequently. We have not hade any burgers, Fish Sandwiches almost exclusi9vely. And various Breakfast stuff.

Any one else notice beef improvements.

Also folks that eat at mcdonalds frequently need to use the App. It automatically saves you 10% on future purchases. Also you can almost always get two breakfast or lunch sandwiches for the price of one and always $2.29 coffee for a buck. Probably overall I average 30% savings.

The biggest problem may not be whether they use beef that's been previously frozen, but how long a patty spent in a warming tray. A place I worked at had foodservice frozen burger patties in the company cafeteria and they were reasonably good. Probably not the greatest quality beef. But it didn't go on the grill until I ordered it at the counter and I saw a raw, frozen patty go on a flattop griddle. So frozen beef was fine if I got it right after cooking. But already fully cooked in one of these things for up to an hour? They get that pale, light brown color and they lose a lot of moisture that simply can't be reconstituted.

When I was a kid, McDonald's locations would generally just churn out everything continuously and put them in a styrofoam clamshell sitting under a heat lamp. The styrofoam seemed to defeat the purpose of the heat lamp though. Regular hamburgers and cheeseburgers just went in paper though, like they do today.

A lot of mom and pop places just buy pre-formed frozen patties (like what Sysco sells) and will only cook them well done because it's just way too hard to control the cooking otherwise. But it can still be a decent burger.

McDonald’s has the best burgers and McNuggets of any fast food place in my opinion. Jack in the Box technically has the best burger but I’ve got to drive to North Carolina to get it. It’s well worth the drive but for local stuff McDonalds does fine. I get McDoubles though plain with only pickles and cheese. But nobody beats McDonald’s nuggets at all. We go to McDonald’s every day for dad to get coffee multiple times a day too and I usually sneak a few McDoubles on the tab too.

You are now my Number 1 go-to food critic.

There’s a lot of hate in this thread for the fast food companies using seed oils, and this or that chemical. But, they’re only using that stuff because the US Gov and most of the “health and fitness” industry went on a multi-decade campaign against animal fats. McDonald’s used beef tallow for their fries in the past. According to this thread, they’re having to use 19 ingredients to replicate the flavor/texture of the fries they used to sell.

Lesson of the day: If the .gov says to do X, then doing the opposite of X is usually best for your long term health and safety.

I know a food sales rep that deals with bars, small restaurants, bakeries.. . He said a lot of places stretch their beef using breadcrumbs.

The folks behind the counter and on the burger assembly line are playing with their nasty phones, have fingernails that look like eagle talons (they wipe they butts with dat?), and are coughing and snorting snot.
I’ll pass….
And you don’t think that happens at fancy high end restaurants too? It’s happening everywhere.

I have eaten at McDonald's a couple times in the last year. Often when I am travelling its drive through for dinner or nothing.

I tried a 1/4 pounder once and it was clearly stored in with the salt pork. Inedible due to the salt - not the burger. I had a chicken something or other that was OK. I tried a double burger and I haven't died yet. Other than the pickle and condiments it didn't taste like much. But you know what, it wasn't much different that the other fast food or sit down chains that everyone frequents. As mentioned, its all sysco pre-cooked stuff everywhere.

Five guys is my standard - albeit no healthier.

I had a pretty good salad at Tropical Smoothie Cafe. I hope it wasn't a fluke - I will be looking for those going forward.

Yep. If I have to eat a fast food burger it’s Five Guys. The fries are great too.
