The newer Skyaktiv-Drive Mazda Auto transmissions have been praised by consumers AND auto press as being better than some manual transmissions of other cars, as far shifting, responsiveness etc goes.
Just saying A/T is always bad is just an old, dying trend.

Take the 10 top "super cars" in the world and see - several of them have dual clutch autos. BMW M3 / M5 for example. Tesla? Aston Martin? I am sure those are BAD cars.

(Most current cars with GOOD A/Ts achieve faster 0-60 times than their manual counterparts, BTW)

This Auto < manual is a PREFERENCE not a FACT.

If you like to own 2016 Miata, which transmission would you choose ?

Newer AT may be faster shifting than manual, but in a sport car there is no substitute for a good manual for pure joy of shifting.

In a MIATA / sporty car, I would choose manual, just like you said, for the experience, - IF my driving situations call for it. - (as in not daily stop/go traffic in town)
-but NOT because auto trans is inherently BAD and would stall on the way to the podium like you said !!! THAT is a very narrow nminded way of thinking in THIS day and age of auto transmissions. Might have been true 2-3 decades ago.

And if I am going to drive a car daily in a lot of stop and go traffic and can't ENJOY the manual I'd have NO hesitation opting for a good auto trans like the one in my wife's 2014 Mazda6. Auto or not it IS a fun to drive car.

Nope, no V-8 option.
The only different engine that YOU can get with it is the 229 CI Chevy 90 degree V-6 from a 1981 Chevy Monte Carlo. 110 hp and GM's CCC system at your disposal

Good luck with that.

I think you have all your posts mixed up, and out of context.

I am the one who said that Mazda most likely puts the auto into the concept car IF it has a drivetrain.

The reason why to put an auto into this concept car is to PREVENT a video of the car stalling from being recorded, as would be possible if it was being driven if it had a manual transmission.

Since we know rotary powered vehicles don't like short periods of running, and being flooded (I have owned an RX-8, I know it's shortcomings in this regard), a concept car with an auto would be the easiest way to move it around without risking the car stalling, and flooding, and then having video of it being posted on youtube later.

Nothing I said had anything to do with Mazda's autos being inferior to their manuals.
I know first hand, I own a 2014 CX-5 with the 6 speed auto, and it's fantastic.
My 2011 RX-8 had a 6 speed manual transmission, and it also was fantastic.

BC.

You're getting your posts/posters mixed up, and not fully comprehending the posts, too.

I stand corrected about getting the posts/posters mixed up. Sorry. I went through several posts fast, and didn't take time to review.
Thanks!

I think 2 of the best manual transmissions are in Miata and S2000.

I wouldn't buy my S2000 if it was only available with an AT.

Manual transmission is the only way to go in a sports car and/or muscle car. That's part of the experience imo. Auto trannies are for "going from point a to point b" cars,or drag racers.

Driving a high power muscle car with a manual transmission is a blast!! Driving one with an auto is boring.

I used to think the same thing but I honestly enjoy the bleep out of the two auto boxes in the Chargers. They have quick, crisp shifts and will let you peddle it, get sideways....etc.

I'm warming up to automatics as well, not because I think they're so great, but mainly because manual trans on most new cars seem to be poorly implemented and overtaken by electronic safety/emissions nannies, taking away a lot of the fun factor.

What sefety and emissions nannies are you on about?

As, I'm sure you know, it's not just the transmission that makes it work "right".

The software that operates the throttle valve, engine RPM, idle droop and so on all add to the proper feel.

For example, many modern cars, such as the new Honda Accord Sport 6 speed, have mushy throttle response and the engine "hangs" at high RPM during a shift. The trans shifts fine, but the shifting "feel" is anything but sporty. In fact, such programming prevents sporty driving by not giving the driver what he asks for. It encourages moderation, not sport.

And, yes, my S2000 is an absolute joy to drive! I'm going to the garage to change sparkplugs and some turbo silicone coupler's now. I have to gap the plugs at 0.020 inches to keep the spark from blowing out at 19 pounds boost.

Read what cujet wrote just above.

Then there are things like clutch-delay valves.

DBW throttle often also screws up the experience by making the accelerator pedal less responsive in certain situations.

I have encountered sluggish e-throttle, but not clutch delay. What cars have the latter feature? Best to avoid them, I think.
