Agree. This is the most likely explanation.

ok update for you.. Was able to check my relative's 16 CX-5, yup like I thought.. The day the oil change was done with 5 qts the level on the oil dipstick was 1/2 way between min and max. A couple days later (today) it was at the 2/3 full mark. So yes it's exactly what I was thinking I've experienced before with my Scion tC's engine, oil hiding out in the galleys, because I know the oil was fully drained.

So there's the answer, it's only oil hiding out in the galleys/etc. At least we have a simple explanation for it.

Also- adding the extra oil to get to the max fill line only adds to what's "hiding" and then you're over the full/max mark on the oil dipstick. I agree put 5 qts in and call it a day.. in case anything more is already in there, it won't cause it to be over filled.

Huh, mine does the same thing. 5.25 quarts and it’s full in the dipstick. Even after checking the next morning. Have driven it in cold weather for a few weeks and now it’s almost half a quart over. Smells like fuel.
