DIY: Mazda 2.5L Skyactiv Water Pump

Mazda Skyactiv engines seem to be popular on this site so hopefully this is a helpful DIY. Replacing the engine water pump on the 2.5's is very very easy. I think the 2.0 is similar. This job was performed on a 2014 with 125K. The water pump had some coolant staining on the body and there was some splattered coolant (residue) in the adjacent area. This condition had been present for the last 15K. According to the Mazda TSB, this was still passable since there was no active leak but the customer still wanted the pump replaced. The pump pulley is held on by three 8mm bolts. There is a big hole on the pulley (and a corresponding recess on the pump) where you can insert a bolt and the pulley will lock onto the body. The pump itself is bolted to the engine using 3 10mm bolts. Undo the wire harness clip and the 10mm clamp bolt for the inlet pipe. Pump comes out. The new pump from Mazda, came with the pump gasket pre-installed but the water inlet pipe o-ring is sold separately. You must replace the o-ring. You will also need a new stretch belt, a new alternator belt and almost two gallons of the Mazda FL22 55/45 pre-mix. Vacuum fill the system, allow the engine to idle for 30-45 min (until the rad fan comes on) with a coolant funnel or with the rad cap off, extract and refill the coolant reservoir and you should be good to go! For removal, you can either cut the belt or pull the belt towards you and rotate the crank pulley simultaneously. For install, zip-tie the belt to the p/s pulley and slowly turn the crank while ensuring that the belt is walking onto the pulley grooves.

If the vehicle is a 2015 or newer, there is no p/s pulley, as the vehicle has electric-assist steering (no pump). Can just zip-tip the belt to the w/p pulley itself.

Nice! I autocross my Miata which is indeed a joy on which to twist wrenches. Upside to competing -besides the fun- is Mazda NA HQ in Irvine supplies all factory replacement hardware at actual dealer cost. They're a great company with solid hardware imho.
