Heya there. I'm doing a service on the missus 1994 Mazda 121 1.3litre 16v 4cyl with 5 speed manual. 230,000 km's. It also has power steering.

It's one of these

So, I want to change the gearbox oil and power steering fluid.
Would the gearbox oil be a standard "Transaxle" GL-4 75W-90?
Would the power steering be something like Mobil 424, Castrol power steering fluid or a Dextron 3 ATF?
Done all the other fluids.
There isn't a car service manual anymore for me to refer to.

Cheers.

I am surprised that the P/S reservoir or reservoir cap doesn't mention what fluid goes in there. If you can see a some hint of red in the old fluid then you can use ATF. However, I know that the fluid can be such a dark shade of brown or black that nobody knows what kind of fluid is in there.

As for the manual transmission, I don't know what it would use.

yes, gear box (M/T) calls for GL-4, 75W90 is fine.

I owned one of these for over 5 yrs (the korean version, built by kia but with Japanese made engine + trannie). Ford here in NA forced all subsequent (including warranty related services) to use ATF to substitute the original lube came equipped from the factory (GL-4, 75W80)).

Q.

The p/s reservoir doesn't have the original cap on it. It's just a blank one. As for the color of the fluid, it's a blackish shade of black. Normal maintenance schedule was applied by my girlfriend (ie. putting petrol in it constitutes a fluid change). There is a Castrol Power Steering fluid that says it's suitable where dextron 1 2 3 and a whole bunch of other fluids are recommended so I think I'll use that.

Ok, so the gearbox (mt) will be fine with a 75W-80, 75W-90 GL-4 spec oil that's suitable for transaxles. That's what I thought.

Cheers again.

That's a good oil. I used it in mum's Audi A4. I'm looking for a cheaper option for the Mazda. Amsoil is pretty pricy here in Australia.

Just another question about the manual gearbox of this Mazda 121 DB. Does anyone know the capacity? I believe it might be 2.5 litres.

Can anyone help me out here?

Cheers,

Dan.

If any of you have done a MT fluid change on this car, how easy did you find it? I did it and found it very difficult as the fill point seems to point downwards. I took the speedo cable out of the transmission and heaps of oil poured out even before taking out the bottom drain plug (car was level).

Upon refilling it, i put the hose in the fill hole and before long some fluid was seeping out. This is after putting in about 1.5 litres. I managed to get nearly all of the 2.5 litres in (probably got about 2.3 in) then had to quickly pull off the hose, cover the hole with my finger to stop fresh fluid pouring out and quickly re-insert the speedo reading bolt.
