Was in WalMart today and saw that they still carry Maxlife Synthetic. Was about $5.50 a quart for 5w30. Then I saw a 5 quart jug of the 5w30 for only $20. Looking at the back I discovered it no longer said ACEA A3 but only ACEA A1!

The production date on this jug was May 2008. I picked up a quart bottle and it still said ACEA A3 with a production date of December 2007. At least I have 63 quarts on stash that I picked up on clearance a year ago.

You don't say?!!? Life as we know it will never be the same.

I saw that too yesterday Tallpall. I don't know what the $#%^ Valvoline is doing. One of the great selling points of this oil was the robust specs. Once my stash of A3 maxlife synthetic runs out, I'm switching.

How is reducing the viscosity or changing the formulation Walmarts call? If anything this makes Maxlife Synthetic even better, there is no need for an a3 engine oil in vehicles that are not specced for it.
I look forward to seeing the updated PDS.

Perhaps it is a bit of a stretch to blame Wally, but it is very true that they hammer suppliers for lower and lower prices. It is conceivable that the oil's spec was lowered to meet a price point or loose shelf space.

Indeed, it's very possible.

i had spot a shelf full of old MaxLife Synthetic 4.4L jug $14.99 in a Walmart SuperStore north of Toronto 2 weeks ago. i add more to my stash.... now i have to check if they are all A3....

Well maybe we can fix it up by running a quart of 20w50 Synpower to the mix.

What's this world coming to? I may have to start running exclusively straight weight oils after my stash runs out.

Oh no, by then they probably will have quit making straight weight. The thickest oil in the year 2020 might be 0w5 and my poor truck, if it hasn't rusted to a pile of dust by then, will spin all it's bearings on that watery stuff.

I didn't know you were skeered of modern light weight oils.

Not at all Wally World's fault.

I noticed toay the 5 qt jugs of Mobil Clean 5000 where gone with no shelf space .... They had the sheet out for the new shelf layout, no dino 5 qt from XOM on the layout.

whose fault in this case? We could only guess.

If they made the oil without the seal swell, I would be all over it and have cases and cases.
Too bad it is now only an A1.

Maybe not Wally's fault. Maybe meeting a current spec, so would be Valvoline's fault for bothering with the spec.

Seal swell is not an issue as it is part of a complete package of seal conditioners and Valvoline will tell you that there is no way the seal conditioner package would screw up your seals. Might just keep them in better condition as your engine ages.
