i just picked up a jug of maxlife sn from walmart today. does anyone know the difference between it and the old sm?
the label looks a little different and the syn blend is off the label but thats all i can tell by the bottle.

I hope Valvo doesn't dumb down Maxlife for SN. The whole line of Maxlife products has been outstanding.

yeah me too. i almost didnt buy it because im not sure what they did to it. they still have 10/30 in sm maybe i should grab the last jugs of it..

An email from Valvoline states their maxlife product is still a blend, and was changed to meet SN specs. That's about all they would say.

Well the new SN maxlife doesn't have the "Resource Conserving" part of the donut, so i would assume that means the same thing.

You always wonder how much synthetic is actually in these blends. Just a thought....Maybe there is not enough synthetic in the oil to legally label it as a blend....so they don't put it on the label anymore. Sometimes they have to make label changes because of laws in different States and jurisdictions on deceptive advertising....who knows for sure.

I don't know if there is Moly in there anymore....they might have replaced the Moly with Titanium as the additive for MaxLife HM.

shhooott you kiddin? if they put titanium in there it would be all over the bottle

30% synthetic from old ads, that i know. Or at least it used to be.

And i wonder if the SM version of this is better than SN. Im new to oil, what is so great about this "SN" ? I saw SL on an old quart i had in my garage. Which one is the best, and why?

Doesn't surprise me. I know a moly count doesn't mean anything by itself, but it's entirely possible the SN is not as good as SM. I find it very hard to believe that if it is a syn blend, that Ashland wouldn't put it on the label. Just doesn't make sense. Then again, neither does the large shelf space dedicated to their new Green bottle 50% recycled oil at Wal*Mart.

+1

While the new SN has about half the moly as the SM version, the old one never had anything close to Redlines reported 900's. We are talking about a move from a moly count of 200-250 depending on which SM VOA you look at to 117 in the SN. If you really want Moly in your favorite SN rated oil, just give it a booster shot of Lubro-Moly MoS2. With its 4400 moly count per 10 oz. That should raise the avg moly count in a 5 qt sump by about 270 plus a touch of boron.
