There have been threads here about Mavis' free tire rotation offer through 12/31/26. I want to share my recent experience with the Pawleys Island, SC location.

I scheduled an appointment online for a 9 AM Saturday, as part of the menu I selected the free tire rotation and free balance check. Pull into the shop at the appointed time, new location, very clean, maybe 6 bays with 2 or 3 full. Spoke with the shop attendant and explained I was there for my free rotation and balance. She looked at me cross-eyed and said the balance part is not free and would be $80. I showed her the appointment confirmation on my phone which said both were free, she pointed out that "free balance check" is only determining if the tires are out of balance, if the tech determines they need balancing, it's essentially $20/tire. I said something about a Philadelphia lawyer, which was wasted on her, told her to go ahead with both services and walked out feeling like a fool. Went to do other errands with my wife in another vehicle and she laughed at me and said something to the effect, "nothing is free, what were you thinking?" Feeling more foolish now, we completed our other business, came back to the shop at 10:30 AM and the car had not moved. I went back in said I needed the car and forget about the appointment. I know others had scoffed at this offer with tales of customer abuse, etc. Shame on me. I will now find a local, independent tire shop and gladly pay them for this service.

Years ago I bought 2 or 4 tires at a nearby, Mavis which wasn't busy. Nothing to report there. I'll go back for their 100,000 mile UTQG tire...maybe.

Twice I've gone with friends to conduct business at a Town Fair Tire (another chain advertising on the radio). One in Vermont, one in Connecticut. They were so slow, it was insulting.

I wouldn't call it shady but just a misunderstanding of how literal the offer was worded. The offer specifically stated free balance CHECK, not free tire balance. It is no different than the free alignment check coupon offered by Firestone, free brake check offered by Midas/Meineke or complementary multi-point inspection/fluid check offered by Jiffy Lube. Clearly a way to identify issues leading to selling/upselling services they offer.

I gave up on them years ago, after they ruined a set of four center caps on my van. They told me after the fact, the tech was too stupid to tell me when he damaged the first cap that he had a problem, he decided to wrecked all four. When I looked at the damaged caps after they completed the job, I headed over to the manager. The manager quickly defended the tech, it didn't bode well for him. It cost them a pretty penny, in the form of deeply discounting the job, and they lost a customer.

OP, I can't say anything about a free tire rotation but if Customer Service is what you are after I had a few good tire purchase experiences buying tires at Discount Tire a few miles North of Pawleys Island in Surfisde Beach SC across from Lowes hwy 17 / 544... The North Myrtle Beach Discount Tire location as well, all 5 Star review!

I have also used Mavis in Murrells Inlet and are nice folks but Discount Tire is 100% Professional IMO and the #1 spot.

I could write a book on bad tire shop experiences...

However, I now at least allow the car dealer to give me a price for tires ( some will match price ) as its easer ( for me ) to allow the tire rotation to be done at the same time the dealer oil change is performed. I stay away from quick lubes as I get better oil change pricing and service with the local Ford and Honda dealer in my area.

Were they GM caps that had the screw on plastic covers that screwed over the lugnuts?

I've had very bad experiences with Mavis tire in New York City; I once went in for tires and they told me that I needed new struts.. The struts only had 11,000 mi on them after that I never went back to Mavis

No these were vintage aluminum Cyclone Wheels with chrome center caps that pop in, and once the wheel is tightened to the rotor/brake drum they stay put. I guess they were tight, he didn't want to bother spending a little time with a rubber mallet, maybe some penetrating oil, etc. He went to town on them, all four, mangling them out.

Mavis has quietly built a shady reputation that seems to be expanding like a bad rash. I'll stick with Discount Tire or a local indie tire dealer.

Yes, and they bought NTB so that so that they can continue the dermatological distress.

I had a new tech at Discount Tire put scratches on all 4 spotless steel wheels trying to get the weights off. Later when I needed a repair on one of the aluminum RAV4 tires I took the wheel off the car and took it to a local recommended indie tire shop. They scratched the flawless wheel. The tech denied doing it and the owner defended the tech until I showed him pics of the wheel I took before I gave it to them. Sometimes you can't win.

Thank you for these suggestions. Litchfield Beach is my DMZ to the north and I try not to go above that unless I am heading to the HD in Murrells Inlet and only then will I go at the crack of dawn. I prefer to do my trading in Georgetown if possible.

I never go north of Georgetown mostly. If I'm driving out of Charleston and going north it is usually only across the bridge into Mount Pleasant.

A recent experience at a James Island Tire Choice They patched (not plugged) a tire I didn't buy from them for free. (I have bought tires from them before). The independent VW/Audi garage here rotates my tires with every oil change. I let them do the change because they are not overcharging and they've done every oil change on the GTI.

I wish I could have a positive experience everyone seems to attribute to Discount Tire. I've had four lugs cross-threaded on one wheel during a rotation. I've had a tire with a screw in it miraculously have another hole appear during the repair 1/4 inch from where the original screw was at. I've had them put a nasty wheel on a cloth gray seat so that it had to be professionally cleaned. Long story short I've sworn them off as well; as for others YMMV. My suggestion is to find a local shop with local people that care and know what they are doing.

I’ve actually had pretty good luck at dealerships for new tires. Normally they are loss leaders and the OEM requires road force balancers as standard equipment. So generally you get a good price on a tire and a decent balance. Obviously I would not take there for a repair/patch.

I went to the GMC dealer to see if they could come close to DT's price for tires for the truck I bought new there and was told no they couldn't.

Tell them to keep it free.

One of four things can happen:

-- They pull your tires, put them on the balancer, everything's fine, and they rotate them back onto the correct corners.

-- They just rotate your tires and lie about checking the balance.

-- They accidentally rebalance your tires for free, because the tech is a creature of habit.

-- They passively-aggressively strip your old weights so you come back to pay the eighty bucks.
