why do different car makers recommend a brand of oil. is it simply that the oil maker "pays or gives oil to" the car makers in order to have their brand "advertised" in the car makers manuals??

or do the makers used the specified oil to test their engines??

Conoco-Phillips makes Motorcraft with input or specifications from Ford engineers to meet Ford standards. It is essentially a house brand for Ford. That is not the case with Hyundai and Quaker State.

Hyundai tested the QS and it met their requirements. When it came time for pricing and contract signing, Shell said recommend us in your owners manuals and this is the price, leave us out of the owners manuals and this will be the price. The rest is history.

It's marketing and it also meets the spec. Thats how it is with most companies(Shell and Ferrari etc).
