Mans best friend

most states prohibit loaded long guns in any vehicle. i’m trying to imagine just how a dog’s paw could discharge a properly functioning, normally configured, bolt action rifle, or any firearm for that matter. a normal long gun positioned in a vehicle’s rear seat area is most likely laid horizontally lengthwise along the seat with the muzzle necessarily pointed outwards to one vehicle side, not pointed at a passenger’s back seated in the front. something isn’t right here, but it’s a more intriguing story than the “dog ate my homework.”

I could see it happening. If the rifle were laying long ways, muzzle pointed towards the passenger door and the dog was back there doing the hoky poky and either angled the gun so that it pointed towards the passenger (low mid section) or knocked it off so that it landed on some misc stuff, angling it up and forward, then stepped on the trigger well area... It's got to be a case of "all the holes in the swiss cheese lining up" sort of thing. Of course it SHOULDN'T have happened to begin with. I guess we'll all just use it as a teaching model of what not to do.

A shorter carbine or mauser on the back seat, pointed to the vehicle's left side, could easily be short enough to pivot on a rear seat as the man's disgruntled and murderous wife loads the dog....rigs a hoop of string through the trigger guard....closes the door almost all the way (so there'll be powder residue on the door card and a gap to pull the string out.
All she has to do is cry deflatedly and hold the dog lovingly and desparately as Johnny Law shows up.

Then there's the matter of the insurance policy she took out on her husband.....8 months prior.

It's a reminder of what can happen. In defense, it won't go off unless somebody is messing with it. As a small game hunter, this is sad and I hope people will learn from his unfortunate experience. I could think of worse ways to die and as cold and ruthless as the world is..this isn't one of them. Bad things can happen to anyone so keep that in the back of your mind.
