Do you cook your own chicken broth to make some soups or you buy broth in a can ?

I make my own chicken broth with fresh whole 4-5 lbs chicken in 12 quart pot. I set the heat near minimum to keep the temperature just below boiling for 2 days. It's tasted so much better than pre-cooked broth in a can without any sodium and preservatives.

Where my mother grew up, they all had slow combustion wood stoves, and all had a stock pot on the corner.

Any and all bones would go into it, and it made some great stuff.

Why bother, when I can buy the stuff for a few bucks a case from the Campbell soup factory near my house.

Yeah, I don't know why they have to add sodium at the factory when they can just add salt to the chicken feed.

It depends on the amount of time that I have available and the receipe in which I'm planning to use the broth.

I don't mind a prepackaged product if the ingredients list is healthy and I don't have the time to make my own. But if I really want to pull the best flavor out of a soup or stew with a chicken base I'll make my own.

We save the bones from our chickens and boil up a big stock pot once or twice a winter. Throw in lots of veggies and herbs and makes great stock. We freeze and use it when needed.
