So I got all the PU 5w30 I could scrounge up at WM but didn't get quite enough for 2 oil changes. I was originally thinking of running it in the Prius, so I got 2 qts of 5w20 to do the rebate, but now I'm thinking I'll run it in my Subaru turbo. I plan to do ~3750 mile OCIs and I don't run the car hard, so I don't want to pay full price for a couple qts of PP. I am thinking that PYB 10w40 might be good to make up the extra, ~1/2 qt per change, as it is probably sturdier than either 5w30 or 10w30. Does that make sense? I do have an unopened qt of PYB 10w30 SM that came with the car. I was going to use it in the mower, but maybe I should just use it with the PU?

Thanks, Doug

I would get some PP 5W30 on the current rebate deal, which you can use twice, and use that.
I'd be ok with the money because I'd do at least double your OCI's.

Thanks, but I already submitted both $10/5 qt Pennzoil rebates on WM close out PU. As far as I have read, not many run Subaru turbo OCIs past ~4K miles and I doubt I will even drive it that far this year.

I was thinking of using the O'Reilly Lots O' Loot $5 off $5 to pick up a few qts of PYB. What would be the best viscosity to mix with 5w30 PU?

Thanks, Doug

whatever car manual calls for. If UOA shows oil thinning out, than mix one grade heavier.
Prius probably call for 5w-20, then mix with 5w-20.
Subaru probably call for 5w30, then mix with 5w30 :), but I personally believe in heavier oils in turbo engines, since they beat up oil pretty good. For subaru I would add 10w-40.
And 3750 miles could be waste of good oil especially if you drive gently and mostly hwy. Keep it till 5000 miles and do UOA with TBN, it will show you if you could stretch your OCI and save money in future.

This is pretty much what I was thinking, although I bet with 4 qts of PU and only a fraction of PYB, the PYB viscosity probably doesn't really matter. I too was thinking the 5w30 PU is certainly stouter than 5w30 PYB, so use a thicker PYB finish the fill on the Subaru. FWIW, my Subaru manual seems to allow for anything from 5w30 through 20w50 (for extreme conditions).

For the Prius, I was going to stick with 5w20 since they are supposed to be easy on oil. Now I'm wondering if I should get a couple qts of 5w20 PYB for a single oil change (it takes ~3.5 qts), or plan on 1 qt of PU and the balance PYB for 2 oil changes...

Thanks again, Doug
