M1 Volatility - multiple vis products

As always, thanks for publishing your test results!

I'm a bit disappointed as I just settled on ESP 5w-30 for my fleet. :(
You’re welcome. I figured that at least one person would be disappointed and that is the least pleasant part about posting the results. However, it is better to be informed about the data than not. Quaker State 5W-40 and Ultimate Protection perform exceptionally well in volatility and oxidation resistance categories.

Where do you even get QS Euro 5W-40?

An online search yielded none for sale anywhere in the USA.

If I could get it, I'd be interested in using it in my Elantra N as a summer oil.

My local Walmart carries it. Have you tried a physical Walmart store or on their website?

And I’d bet, the Walmarts that still have it aren’t going to have it any longer, once the existing inventory runs out.

That’s unfortunate, because it’s obviously a fine oil that carries excellent approvals, at a decent price (what did it sell for again?).

But M1 Euro FS is $25 per jug (actually, $20 currently with rebate).

My theory on its demise (as a labeled product, at least, since we know it’s still around as She’ll and Pennzoil products) is the poor reputation of Quaker State as a brand.

Us oil nerds who’ve hung out on BITOG for a while know QS as a label that offers really stout oils for a very fair price, often just re-labeled Pennzoil products, maybe with a slightly different add pack.

But the average Joe has heard his dad and granddad talk about how ole Quaker State had wax in it and would sludge and gum up.

And it’s known as a budget option.

Furthermore, the target user is a DIY guy, who spent a lot on a European car, who wants to use a budget oil?

IDK, most Euro car guys (outside of BITOG) aren’t probably going to reach for the green jug as their first choice.

Around a month ago, when I learned how difficult or impossible it became to get QS 5W-40 for a good price, I was quite upset. BornSlippy is right that Pennzoil Platinum 5W-40 is the same formulation. I just bought that PP for a decent, but not great, price at the big online seller named after a river and rainforest. 6-pack of 1 qt. bottles must be chosen to get that decent price. Free shipping.

Derek from Vice Grip Garage calls it "The Jungle Website". :ROFLMAO:

Have you tested PP 5W-40 to see if it performs the same? I'm curious.

This is a major bummer. I haven't seen QS 5w-40 on shelves for months now, and it appears that they've also taken QS Ultimate Protection off sale at all of the stores near me. They were a great "sleeper brand" for us folks.

From a marketing perspective, it makes sense that they're sticking with their bread-n-butter value products. Most people buying Quaker State aren't willing to shell out for a higher tier option aside from their basic synthetic.

I still recall when a friend poked fun at me for having a bottle of Quaker State in the back of my BMW. To many Euro car guys, QS is pretty much on the same level as Dollar Tree oil.

Back before HPL came along, after I realized the Brotella legend was actually a myth, I was happy to buy QSFS 5w30 from Menards for $18/5qts. I put it right next to my Delo XLE 10w30, PPE 0w40, and Valvoline PB 10w30. I still have 15ish OCIs worth of it for “courtesy” changes… I use it on friends & family Subarus and Vulcan 3.0s.

These oils are in the class of “5k no-brainers”, referencing the user more than the oil… IYKYK… 😜

Don’t help the BBC Rat 🐀 make a comeback - he loved QS and hated Brotella LoL …

Yes, but for viscosity it says “use” 0w20 not just “recommended” and doesn’t give a range of grades for different applications. That’s been my biggest holdup
“We recommend you use 0w20” is not a requirement, especially when it is universally known that higher grade oils provide a better MOFT and reduce metal-to-metal contact.

Yeah, I’ve decided to move to 5w30. I was just pointing out the manual simply says “use 0w20”, not “we recommend….”
