M1 full syn vs. M1 EP...is there a difference

Marketing IMO. I haven't seen any indication that M1 EP is worth the price or any different in terms of formulation.
 
Yes. Warranty for 1. Mobil 1 is not warranted for extended oil change intervals. Mobil 1 EP is up to 15,000 normal miles if your car is out of warranty. Otherwise for both oils they suggest to follow your owners manual.
 
Quite a difference from my UOA's. Regular M1 is good for 8000-10000 miles at most. I am running the M1 EP to 15,000 with good uoa's. I do mix the 5w-30 ep with some 15w-50 ep which produces super results in my Honda Accord with almost 200,000 miles on it. Nice to be able to go so long between changes. Give me more time for sailing and going to sports car races.

I`ve got a half quart of regular M1 15W50 and a half quart of M1 15W50 EP,and the EP seems a bit thicker.
 
SuperSyn used to refer to the PAO Base oil itself, but it got copped into a retail product name. Hark the days of Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic and the sparkley promise of future twinkle-clean engines with Mobil 1 SpectraSyn.
 
So was the M1 used for the 23k mile drain intervals in the "M1 around the world" regular or EP? Looks like the regular to me based on the commercial. This makes me think it's all marketing. What a joke.

Buster, I agree with you. Although I'm not an oil/lube pro like most of you guys, I did conclude that M1 regular and M1 EP is a marketing joke by this:

I have a '03 Mercedes E320 (M1 0W-40 factory fill) that I'm selling soon. When under warranty, the dealer provided free oil changes (MB stopped this in 2005). The engine computer calculated that the oil should be changed at approx 15Kmi for my driving habits. So......, plain ol' M1 0W-40 was good for 15Kmi then, but now Mobil claims that their new EP is "warrantied" for 15Kmi??? What, they never claimed that for the regular 0W-40???

BTW, since Mercedes no longer offers free oil changes, their OCI recommendations are 13K for non-AMG engines and 10K for AMGs!!

I bought a new car which also has M1 0W-40 as factory fill, but I'll be putting in something else, only because I'm disgusted with their marketing. M1 is a great oil if you don't go past 10Kmi -- I also got good UOAs in the MB from this oil, but never pushed the car -- commuter driving on the highway at 50mph!

Long drain capability is one of M1 0W-40's greatest properties.

Agree, and I like MB's OCI recommendations, and I think these should be applied to other cars -- 10K for high performance engines and 13K for all others (diesels excluded since I don't have any experience with them).

If the company puts up that kind of warranty with EP, the obviously have a lot of faith in it. Enough to make me a user.
 
In the round the world ad, they go over 40K miles without an oil change. Showing the standard Mobil 1 bottle in the ad is asking for trouble, imo. During the test did they change oil filters and top off the oil?
 
Buster - perhaps on "around the world" it was regular - but for the Vegas taxis I think it's EP.

However there's no doubt there's plenty of marketing ploys - before EP the M1 web site's FAQ area there were Q&As that said regular M1 would go to any OEM OCI and beyond. And if I remember correctly, some of the Q&A's were discussing close to 20k mile OCIs of some european cars. But in fairness to them, for them to give that blanket warranty for EP (given all the hard engines and hard driving conditions in America) - apparently they jacked EP up a bit (as they said w/ the 50% increase).

But from my accumulated pea size knowledge, I'll take M1 0w40 over EP any day.
 
More of the M1 EP oil has the A5/B5 rating than the non-EP stuff, last time I looked at Walmart. The Castrol synthetic had the rating too, but little of the dino did.
