Actually performance won. Technology changes and things improve, that's why I think that at some point the German synthetic law will come back and bite them. It may have been useful in the past but going forward it's going to be a hindrance.
But since performance based on actual standards isn't as alluring as the nebulous "it's better because of the base stock composition" then the mystique will persist.
