Anyone here with inside connections at Mobil? I'd like to verify the actual HTHS of M1 ESP 5w30 is or is not 3.58. (or, better yet, what HTHS range it tests at)

Is the ACEA A5 spec 3.50 or 3.5?
Depending on how they round, 3.58 rounds down to 3.5 just fine!

Also, they claim it 'meets the test requirements' which I'll assume means just that. I'm happy with an oil that performs regardless of whether it holds every imaginable license.

Right, and the claimed ACEA C3 calls for >/= 3.5. It can't be both A5 and C3.

They are claiming to meet certifications that are mutually exclusive on that data sheet.

"ACEA (Meets Engine Test Requirements) A5/B5"

They do not claim it meets A5/B5 totally.

It thought that in order to get MB 229.31 & 229.51 the oil has to have HTHS > 3.5?

3.58 is > 3.5, so MB 229.31/.51 is met

Too many worry about spec shenanigans. Please understand the difference between "formal approvals", and "meets or exceeds" or "the following quality level".

A5 is /= 2.9
A3 is >/= 3.5

In addition M1 is not lying when they say it "Meets engine test requirements" for A5 because they're the same for both A3 & A5 save for an additional test for fuel economy with regards to A5.

So what you have with M1 ESP is an oil that meets A5 engine tests but does it with an HTHS slightly over 3.5 (3.58). Kinda remarkable IMO.

There's no smoke a mirrors here from Mobil 1.
