So I was on my Honda forum and a guy who races Lotus 's in New Jersey says that his track buddies have noticed a lot more engine failures since they switched to EP. Their brilliant hypothesis was the larger additive package was the culprit. Still, Kinda odd...

What parts are failing?

Have you any knowledge of a warranty claim being made against Mobil for alleged engine damage due to the use of their brand of motor oil?

I'd be wary of placing much credence in anecdotal evidence. And if they are running engines at power settings/densities where catastrophic failure can even be an issue, using the services of an expert (ie: Terry Dyson) would be a very good idea and probably very economical.

I dont care what kind of oil you use anything thats running at high revs for long periods of time will eventually take a

That's why I titled the thread "M1 EP Gossip (UNSUBSTANTIATED)" I wasn't expecting people to run out and drain their sumps. Just giving you something to chew on.

He indicated more spun bearings but I don't know if it was limited to that.

What's interesting here is that the additive package on EP is very similar to sl M1. Besides higher TBN, the biggest difference supposedly being more supersyn which is part of what set their racing oil apart. Is it possible theve gone to a 20wt for more power or current warranty requirements. Nothing wrong with 20w for a daily driver but the added heat of racing would make it effectively thinner while also putting a greater load on the bearings. Not a good combo.

Well see that makes sense seeing as how they will warm up really fast so condesation is not an issue as well as it causing corrosion through acid production. They most likely get changed after every track event or close. Considering the close clearance race engines can have then blowby and other forms of contamination is not that big of an issue either.

goodvibes, EP does not come in a xw-20 weight.

My question would be why are they running EP? Is it just because it costs more it must be better? Are they chenging their oil the same or are they letting it stay for more miles? Any UOA's on it?

I have no idea. They said weekend racing and the guy was a Lotus buff. I'd figure it'd be some sort of SCCA type racing. I'm not defending the guy, his statement, or his and his buddies choice of oils. I certainly have nothing against Mobil1 as I have six quarts at the ready in the garage. He was talking about 15W50 EP. He was complaining about not being able to find it in the non-EP formula. I mistakenly told him all the old M1's are still avilable.

tell them to check out newcelica.org. there were plenty of oil starvation problems on the celica.

The HTHS has been lowered with the new 15w-50 EP formula 4.43, compared to the old 15w-50 which was close to 5.1 (red cap). Not sure if it makes a difference though between good protection and failure at the track. Oil analysis is really the only way to tell what's going on.

noob, that post wasn't there yet when I was putting in a reply. It takes a while to get up to speed before replying, and I don't always refresh before adding my .02

Dr.T, M1 racing had plenty of detergents. I forgot about the EP not being available in 20wt. Never the less, the EP isn't much different than SL in adds. I doubt that M1 EP got downgraded during the recent oil shortage so I would put it to coincidence or a bunch of guys have done the same fatal mod to there cars. I'm sure that TRDUSA2002 remembers when 2ZZs were going down from a seemingly harmless undersize pulley mod.
