My fiance's car is currently at 9k miles with this oil (06 Nissan Altima 2.5) and I'm wondering if I should really go the distance as Mobil 1 states it's good for 15k miles.

Just a little background on the vehicle, the oil was changed to the M1 EP at 62k with a m1 filter and I've added just a tiny bit of make up oil since then (maybe a 1/4 of a quart). Prior to this oil change the motor has had dino oil since new and ran from 3k-5k miles. Also her work commute is probably 90% hwy and 50 mile round trip per day.

The car has had OCI's of 3-5,000 miles to the point it was changed over to M1 EP. I would go 15,000 miles or one year with confidence. Just make sure to check the oil level and add when needed. Might be interesting to do a UOA after 15,000 miles.

Back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's, before I retired, I did many one year, 18,000 to 20,000 mile OCI's. My question is: What did they do to regular M1 that they now have to put out a special new line of oil (EP) to be able to claim 15,000 mile OCI's?

Wow. Nothing could be further from the truth.........

If I was going to do 15,000 then I would do UOA at 10,000 to check TBN. But then again the first run of any oil won't show accurate numbers. I'd check the 2nd run at 10,000 miles and go from there.

But, I like my even 10,000 so I don't worry about UOA.

I've averaged 10-12K and went 15K one year on 15w50.
Mostly because of ignorance and laziness. The Caravan
still running like new and a little varnish but seems
relatively clean.

I'm confident M1 is a good product and in most cases EP can
easily go 15K. And I've gone much longer than a year. I believe they are being cautious and a little
conservative with the 15K number. Just my unscientific opinion
and gut feeling.

Its good oil. My car had consumption issues with it, but it sure cleaned out the engine. If you car does not use it, then it will go the distance in most non sludge prone engines when combined with a good filter.

A year ago with the Focus I did a UOA with 5-30EP at 10K and it showed very low wear #s and almost 4 TBN left.

Depends on the engine. Many engines will do 15K easly with this oil.

It would be almost foolish to buy M1 EP, which is guaranteed for 15,000 miles, and wastefully throw it away at only 10,000 miles. Maybe if it was just the regular M1 5w30 I might watch it closely; any synthetic oil should be able to go 10,000 miles or one year, or, really, what is the point?

10k max? Only if it takes a year to go 10K. And then, I would not be using the EP; I would just be using regular synthetic.

1999nick,
I
have a friend that really abuses his 99 Chevy truck with poor Maintainence. He uses M1 5-30 and only changes his oil only if he has nothing better to do. 15-20K OCIs are common for him. I saw him recently and his truck now has 265K and the engine still runs remarkably well. Go figure.
