M1 0w40 in "beater" cavalier

The oil will be fine, but if it is a beater, I would use the least expensive option possible.

You seem to like Smitty's Super S and ST.

If you do stick with M1 0w40, run it for at least 7.5k and top off as needed.

I would use some of that Havoline 5W30 from Wal-Mart that they're practically giving away-$11.77 minus a $5 mfr. rebate, up to 3 rebates, the one I sent in came back fast, too.

By definition if it's a beater it can't run synthetic. (Unless it's used synthetic from another vehicle). If you want to run synthetic, you may need to upgrade it to "daily driver" or "weekend vehicle".

Exactly.

Exactly. A synthetic oil like Mobil 2 would be perfect for a beater.

It's overkill of course, but if the cost is palatable to you and it's working, why not? As for that grade in the winter, I'd say no problems. If I can use 5w-40 in the winter, you can use 0w-40 in your winter.

Fortunately, these aren't the days where we would have to buy M1 0w-40 only in one quart bottles and never find them on sale.

I think the OP just put the oil in the car. Also I believe he bough the oil for $22 and change minus the $12 rebate puts the oil at $10 and change. Add in the cost of the filter and total cost of oil change is less than $15. The oci is easily good for ONE year since the car probably sees limited miles.

Thank you for any suggestions

What are your driving habits?

Those aside, if it's doing well now it will do well in the winter.

You can get the Mobil 1 on sale w/rebate at WM for $2.17/qt through October. It's hard to get much cheaper than that for any synthetic...or even with most conventional oils. Unless your car is only worth $20, I'd use the Mobil 1 with no concerns. At the price I'd run M1 in beaters, daily drivers, and weekend only toys.

Understood, but that precludes a 45 mile round trip to WalMart, so the cost of gas makes it doable for me (and many others who have a local Napa Auto Parts store, and no local WM....)

Driving will be 70/30% highway to city ratio. Yes, I put M1 0w40 in few days ago. The Smittys and ST is being used in the new g.f.'s Kia also

You have a new girlfriend? Maybe some pictures.

It's your car at the end of the day. If you sleep better at night with M1 0W-40 in the sump, then be it. It's a fantastic oil and for the price, I don't understand what all the moaning about "using an expensive oil in a beater" is.

I'd only use M1 if you're taking advantage of the rebates. Otherwise, I'd use a decent HM oil or whatever is on sale. That being said, I did use Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 in that engine when I had a Sunfire, and I had no trouble starting it in winter and it got decent mileage...

+1

Mobil 1 bought on rebate and sale at Wally IS one of the cheapest things one can buy (about $12 for 5QT). I've also used syn in beaters. A "beater" is subjective, he may keep the car a few years and some "cleaning" oils like Mobil 1 may reduce consumption and restore some performance and fuel economy...

Personally, I'd just haunt K-marts and grab up Smitty's SuperS conventional and HM...

Well, this beater has 200,557 miles on it as bought last week for $500 total. yeah, it's two different colors and a 2dr but passed PA Emissions(a major joke as I am a emissions inspector) and a PA safety inspection(another joke). That means it's a daily or backup driver in my book. The M1 is cleansing some light black gook out too
