I own a 2008 VW Passat with a 2.0 turbo and a 2012 golf TDi.

I have been reading about low saps oils for use in my TDi but I wonder if low SAPs also equals less lubrication? I considered using TDi spec oil in the Passat but I'll stick with the M1 0W40.

If I correctly assume that low SAPs does equal lower oil lubrication, what is the net result given a VW recommended 10K oil change interval for the TDi?

Also, I could not find any information about Liqui Moly oil and their often touted Cera Tec through a search. does anyone have an opinion or UOA that they can share??

I should have written, "stick with 5W40 TDT" I used 0W40 during that last oil change in the 2.o and it it is the first time I had to top off the oil between 3,000 mile oil change interval.

Low and mid saps oils are used when your vehicle has a diesel particulate filter.

But I have also noticed that they were specified on a family members Vectra 2.2 Direct Injected petrol engine. Perhaps it helps to reduce the carbon build up mentioned on the forum?

But do low SAPs oils have a lubricating deficiency? As thr acronym suggest, those elements that are reduced may in fact provide greater lubricity...it's a guess on my part, certainly not science...

The recommended oils are suitable for the intended service. There are other antiwear chemicals blended into the oils that take the place of the agents that contribute to the sulfated ash, phosphorus, and sulfur.

Low SAPS oil usually have a lower TBN number. They are not deficient in any way when compared to non low SAPS oils but its just that their use longevity is not up to par with non low SAPS when we compare oranges to oranges i.e. synthetic to synthetics.
