low saps oils

Are these so called low saps oils better for a di engine. I usually use Quaker State Ultimate Durability5w30 or Castrol edge 5w30 but At 40k I needed a bg44 intake cleaning because the Hyundai tech said my car was in need of cleaning. BG44 works by the way. No more weird noise and the car is much more peppy. I am trying to figure this di thing out. I run synthetic and use top tier fuels but was just wondering if a low saps oil wwould help any. And if so which oils are low saps. I change my oil at 3,750 miles so im sure any oil would be fine. But I been running syn since day one so I wanna stick to it.

I would think a low volatility oil (NOACK) would be more important than low SAPS. Low SAPS is more for emissions equipment protection in modern diesels.
 
Although it would seem that NOACK is an important parameter for DI engines (and it likely is), some additive producers have indicated that low-SAPS oils can help with intake deposits in the same way that the help eliminate DPF deposits in diesel vehicles. By having a low-SAPS oil in the crankcase, there are less ash forming additives to cause valve build-up.

The only downside is that in NA where we have higher sulfur fuel in general, TBN retention takes a hit and thus the OCI usually needs to be reduced (if you or the manufacturer are already using an extended OCI in the first place).
 
Low-SAPS oils -- ACEA C* categories -- are mostly intended for DPF protection. However, they have also been claimed to reduce intake-valve deposits in DI engines.

I think it's A-OK to use mid-SAPS oils -- ILSAC GF-5 oils -- in DI engines. I believe the benefits of low-SAPS (ACEA C*) oils for reducing intake deposits in DI engines are highly exaggerated.

Note that ACEA A3/B4 (Mobil 1 0W-40 etc.) is high-SAPS, as opposed to ILSAC GF-5 being mid-SAPS.

For DI engines, it's more important to stick with a full synthetic, which has less oil deposits on the intake valves from oil oxidation, than to try to find a low-SAPS oil. The new Pennzoil PurePlus Platinum made of GTL is almost as good as Group IV PAO in base-oil oxidation resistance.

There is also a new Pennzoil Ultra Platinum 0W-40 if you can find it. It may help as the oil metered by the valve-stem oil seals will be much less than with 5w30. However, I don't know the ash level in it, which may negate the lower-oil-metering benefits of the thicker oil.

There's an old Lubrizol presentation floating around which claimed lower levels of intake deposits with Low-SAPs oils.

Low Saps oils have been used in europe for about 10 years.
 
True low-SAPS oils with SA
In US, there is Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w30 and Mobil 1 ESP Formula M 5W-40. The 5w30 is actually more like a "5W-35" and only slightly thinner than the 5W-40. SA = 0.6% for both as opposed to 0.8% for regular M1, which is also not high in SAPS at all. So, if you like, give one of the Mobil 1 ESP Formulas (5w30[35] or M 5W-40) a try.
