Our boston terrier was 15 years old. Started coughing last night and this morning the same. Clearly he was in congestive heart failure. He could not lie down and was belly breathing. Pretty much knew what the outcome would be.
Took him to the vet, chest x-ray was pretty much whited out. He had a murmur so they were pretty sure he lost his papillary muscle and had acute mitral regurgitation. We put him to sleep pretty quick.
We thought that the best gift we could give him, and the best way to honor him was to not let him suffer. Tough though, we really do miss him. We have had him half our marriage.
His name was Festus, from the old show Gunsmoke.
