My sister was unfortunately in accident and is looking to replace her older Honda Pilot with a newer 3 row SUV. She has test driven a few 2020 to 2022 Chevy Traverses and likes the way they drive and the amount of space in the rear with third row folded for her dog's travel crate. I'm not overly familiar with the newer models, but I have read and heard some not so favorable things over the years about the older models in terms of reliability. I would like to think that any issues with the timing chains on the 3.6 would have been resolved at this point, but just trying to do the big brother thing to help her minimize the chance of headaches down the road.

She is looking primarily at what I believe are mid trim LT models, as she wants AWD, leather, and a few niceties without going for a fully loaded model. Anything she buys would be low mileage, as she would ideally like to keep it for at least 10 to 15 years.

She is not necessarily easy on her cars, but she can follow a maintenance schedule well if one is laid out for her.

Any input on these model years is appreciated, as all she really has to go by is the Consumer Reports ratings, which I tend to take with a grain of salt.

I have a 2017 Traverse n 2020 Enclave zero issues but low in miles. Nice n roomy both ride nice with plenty of power. I like the Enclave more it rides like a old school Buick nice and comfortable super quiet great travel vehicle.

Thank you for the reply, I will be sure to pass it on.

A vehicle was purchased. She found a 2021 Traverse 3LT AWD with less than 15k miles in great condition. Has all the features she was looking for. She was not able to test drive an Enclave, but is very happy with the Traverse. Hopefully it will treat her well.

I have nothing but good things to say about our 2021 LS AWD at this point. I bought it used a year ago with ~34K miles on it and we're at about 49K now. I did have some bolts rot off on a mid-section exhaust flange and I had to have the rear alignment adjusted. They are super roomy and comfortable. I did a Buffalo to South Carolina and back trip in it a month ago and I believe it is the nicest long road trip vehicle I've owned and I've owned a lot of different vehicles.

If you are into DIY maintenance, they are roomy under the hood and all driveline fluids are easy to drain/fill. Regular ATF changes seems to help these 9T65E transmissions live their best life. Very easy to do. You need ~6.5qts per drain/fill. I have Castrol Transmax Universal in mine. Most of your Traverse related forums will recommend Mobil1 black label synthetic ATF (gotta be the black label). The transfer case and rear carrier use standard 75w90 gear oil. There is a wet clutch oil reservoir in the rear carrier that holds Pentosin 11s. This fluid seems to hold up for the long term.

Not to say they don't exist, but you don't hear of timing chain issues with the LFY 3.6L. Time will tell on that. They hold 6qts of 5w30 and use a large spin on filter. Not stretching oil changes is imported for GDI engines IMO.

The major problems you'll see reported online with the 2018-2023 Traverse is exhaust system related. There is a "front pipe" assembly, with a bracket that breaks free from a pipe parallel to it, causing a gaping hole in the exhaust and lot of exhaust noise. There are TSBs in regards to this issue, but oddly and in GM fashion, only the 2021 model year has special warranty coverage for this part. Some owners got away free of charge. Many do not.
