Used SUV's to stay away from?

I hear most 10r80s are good, and I agree the GM programming is in an entirely better league. I got a bad copy of the 10r80 in my 2018 f150. It’s been limping on lubegaurd red, which has done a remarkable job of treating it. Dealer was no help, and I’ve driven it past the end of warranty with the help of lubeguard. It gets bad every once in a while, I drain/fill, redose with the additive and reset the adaptives and keep going. I really, really like many things about my 150. Drives supremely well, 2.7 gets great mileage, and it’s very comfortable inside. I hope to keep this one a while, at some point devoting it to weekend only duty, and probably won’t buy another.

The ten speeds in the GM products are fine- while the 10 speeds in 2020 and prior in Fords are complete and utter garbage. I traded in a 2020 F150 with the 10 speed- for a Silverado with a ten speed- there is no comparison.

Have have you come to terms you will need to replace the transmission at some point?

Which is why my wife and I decided on just one kid.
Long story short, we were blessed with 2, but agreed 3 would be awesome if it happened.
After nearly 3 years of trying I did say if I hit 39 before #3 was on the way, we'd be done as I don't want to have kid's in high school as I'm nearing or hitting my 60's.
She shared the news with me a little over a week ago...1 month shy of my 39th birthday :ROFLMAO: Cut it close!

Back on topic: Does anyone have any experience with the Infiniti QX80's? 5.6L paired with a 7Spd Trans.

Good eye @CKN

We aren’t sure what the best move is, and I tend to overthink these things. If nothing else, we started budgeting a couple of months back to save for … something. We’d either like to add a DD for me to commute in and keep the truck, or push off a little bit for some kind of a replacement, and I just don’t want to buy anything right now, especially another thing in the price range of a truck. The lure of a hybrid has been captivating, but finding one in a body style that “makes me giggle” has not been as easy.

Full candor. Being an aging car guy is hard. The metrics used for decision making when I was 30 do not apply here. I’m having to learn to think new ways.

It’s got 73k on it now. I’ve started a log list on my phone to track the days it acts up badly. If/when the pattern starts to get steeper, that’s my litmus. It’s the best I can do to keep it out of my own head. I think next year will be my next decision check-in unless it springs another scare on me.

CEL came on last week for a catalyst error, and went out on its own after a week. It resolved before I had the time to look at it. Most folks probably aren’t as picky as I get here.

Personally, three kids = minivan.
These are supremely practical and useful vehicles and when we had kids at home that's what we rocked, or at least I did, since wifey preferred the '99 Accord 5spd we'd bought for me as her commuter (wonder why).
No matter, I drove the Aerostar as a commuter for some years and it was okay. I'm not really an image kind of guy.
Substance over profile.
Anyway, I'd bet that a modern minivan would blow you away with its space and utility. Much better than a join the crowd SUV/CUV in actual family use.

What..... which one is the better of the Subaru SUVs for reliability / comfort / highway driving / ride / interior space? They seem to have several available these days.

3 kids?

Sliding doors FTW. Also, 3rd row is much more usable in a minivan. And captains chairs in the middle are alright.

Newer Toyota highlander comes up close - surprising amount of usable space in these, and they have good weight distribution for those who still seek the perfect apex (who carves corners in a highlander?).

Oddly - and I know this sounds weird - I received more “curious looks” from women when I drove the minivan than any other vehicle, if that means anything. I had a particular navy blue gen IV Chrysler TC, absolutely bland cookie cutter minivan. HVAC was superb, NVH was top notch. Mpg was impressive and it would double-stripe the ground if pressed to do so. It didn’t age as gracefully as a Japanese brand, but tbh it was kind of fun. Good brakes, shocks upgrade, and tires made for a machine I could still hustle and drive once they were at school. Nobody thinks about that with a van. Also, carried full sheets of plywood and large tool rental from HD with embarrassingly greater ease than the tundra which replaced it.

My wife and I were 37 when our son was born; we might have had a second if Number One Son had slept the night more than once in his first 14 months (ear tubes were the solution).

The only experience I have with a 10Spd is the two 5.0 F150's we have at work. A 2018 and 2019. Both from new the trans has clanked, clunked, banged, clicked, and whatever other word you want to throw at it. The frequent shifting up and down and those noises just drive me crazy and just makes me cautious about others. We actually just traded the '19 for a '24 Sierra with the 6.2 that so far does seem to operate A LOT better than the Ford according to my boss. May test drive a GM 10Spd to see for myself.
Never had an EB and probably wouldn't own a used one without some kind of Extended Bumper-to-Bumper Warranty.
I’m not sure we know why what’s supposed to be the same transmission design had different outcomes. Metals, machine work, component selection, the TCM and programming - don’t know - but my 10 speed GM is stellar - My popular Mopar transmission is the clunky one. Soon to do my 2nd ATF change at 40k on the Jeep …

My 6L80e is doing well as it approaches the century mark😉

You are a better man than me. While my F150 ran fine when it was in 10th gear it was the constant gear slipping, going from 10th to 3rd when passing on the freeway with a very loud and scary " bang" I just could not deal with it any more. Had it like 14 months- lost significant money trading it in.
But yea- I get it. Dont know if after the purchase of my Silverado if it will be my last vehicle and/ or truck purchase.
If we get rid of our travel trailer at some point- I could see moving in to a Colorado or something like it. But it would need to make some sense money wise.
