Looking for amsoil in southeast michigan

Hey guys, great forum.
I'm interested in switching from conventional oil to 100% synthetic from amsoil. From the amsoil website, I did the dealer locator, hoping to find somebody local who can sell it to me without me paying the full shipping price. I understand I can buy it from the website for about $10 shipping, but to me this is a lot. I would think a local dealer would buy 10 cases at a time, at wholesale, and I would pay less... I avoid the Preferred Customer fee, and I pay only a portion of his bulk shipping. Anyway, I have contacted several of the local dealers, and none seem to carry any stock. All have suggested that I order online.

So... can anyone point me to a dealer in SE Michigan who has some stock, or who I can "share" an order with?

Where is my nearest amsoil distribution warehouse? TIA!

Do you have any NAPA locations near you? All of the NAPAs around me carry Amsoil in stock.

Sounds like you need to become a dealer and stock some Amsoil, if no one else in your area is doing that. If you take the preferred customer option (6 months for $10) you will get it a dealer cost. Getting it from a dealer will not save you that much unless you can find one that will sell it for cost (some do)Dealers pay shipping too and buying more is not that much less. If you can order at least two cases and several filters at once it will save you on shipping. The nearest warehouse is in Superior WI.

Most local dealers can't give you PC price, and not fold some shipping cost into it. Stores will charge near suggested retail.

As others have said best is to become a PC. Contact me if interested.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I checked out my local Napa... they do not carry amsoil products. I have yet to check my local Oreillys/Murrays, but I tend to shop there a lot for all my other car products, and I do not recall seeing any amsoil products there in the past.

However, during my trip to Napa, a guy overheard me asking about amsoil, and he told me a small shop that carries it (Romulus auto supply near Middlebelt & Ecorse). I went there, and sure enough, they have it. They don't have much variety on the shelf, but they can order whatever I want in their normal "monthly" shipment. Quoted me $32 for a gallon of the extended drain 0W20. Plus tax I assume, but no shipping. Retail on the amsoil site is $35 (plus about $10 shipping, plus tax). I assume the PC wholesale price is around $28, plus about $10 shipping, or about $38 plus tax. So this price of $32 appears to be exactly what I was hoping to find... a bit more than PC but less than retail, and no shipping passed on to me since they buy about $3000 worth of product at a time, and I don't have to pay the membership fee.

Now I realize that the 0W20 stuff is rated for 25000 miles or 1 year. I drive about 10k-12k miles per year. I have been debating between this amsoil 0W20 versus Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30 which is rated for 15k miles or 1 year. I can get the Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5qt jug for $26. My car takes 5 qts, so I'm looking at $26 for Mobil 1 Extended Performance, or $40 for amsoil 0W20 ($8 per quart)... both will get me through one year of driving.

Questions for you guys... which do you recommend? Mobil 1 Extended Performance or is the amsoil worth the extra $14? Or is there a different amsoil product I should consider to get me thru 12k miles/ 1 year?

Should I really drive a full year on either of these products? I have always been a 3000 mile OCI kinda guy with conventional oil... this is my first leap to synthetic. It just seems too good to be true, you know?

Final question... filter... I know with the extended OCI that I need a good filter. I notice on the M1 jug that it says no special filter is needed. Amsoil recommends their EaO filter for about $17. Can you guys recommend a good filter, keeping price in mind, that will get me through 10-12k miles? I see a Wix filter, part number 51516 that I can buy for $6. Would this be sufficient for my needs?

BTW... I drive a 2006 Ford Focus 2.0L 4 cyl. Cat-back exhaust and cold air intake with K&N fabric filter. I'm also a hypermiler... getting 50+ mpg and loving it. The engine never idles, but because I shut the engine off at traffic lights, the engine sees many re-starts per driving cycle.

If you only typically drive 10-12k, I would run AMSOIL and not think twice about keeping it in there a year. Maybe snag a oil analysis like I plan to do at about 5-7k if you really want the reassurance.

I always say if you are going to run such high quality oil in your vehicle, no reason not to go with their brand oil filter that will be guaranteed the life of that oil as well. Remember, your oil is only as good as your filter keeps it, in a lot of ways.

Personally, I would like the assurance, in the situation you provided, that I would not be inching too close to comfort towards the recommended OCI. I tend to err on the side of caution, myself.
