Looking for a Hatchback

My daughter was in the same situation. She wanted to replace a 2007 Versa with another similar hatchback. We looked at all the new compact hatchbacks. In the end she ended up with a 2014 Toyota Matirix with 36K miles and complete maintenance records and a new set of tires. The car was registered in NC and had no rust. The difference in purchasing new versus a low mileage 2014 was over $12K with taxes and fees. Something to consider.

Currently have an 05 Matrix that I like. It's actually grown on me over the years with it's faithful service. I think it does sit higher compared to the current model. The new model comes with a bigger engine, a 2.0 versus the previous 1.8 liter. So a little more power doesn't hurt. Available with the cvt or a manual. Good luck with the purchase. The 05 has aged very well after 152k miles and sitting outside all the time. Having a lighter color and detailing it once a year has also helped. Plus keeping detailer/waterless wash inside the car for bird bombs, bug splatters, tree sap, etc...Still has a nice shine to it.

Everything is really good nowadays!

The new Ford Focus gets great reviews, shame it's gone from the USA.

Can't really go wrong with a Civic, 2020 Corolla or Mazda 3.

Give the Elantra GT a look.
I have two of them.
I really can not find anything to complain about.
The car does everything very good.
Both of mine are the non turbos but still have enough to do 0 to 60 in 8 seconds and they hold the curves like a go kart.

The 2020 Toyota Yaris is a rebadged Mazda 2 , reliable but not as nice as the Corolla
The Toyota Corolla is pretty bulletproof and drives a lot better than previous generations. Very reliable for 10+ years.
The Toyota Prius is the most reliable and maintains its value better than other vehicles. She could easily keep it for 10 years+. AWD Option is only $1000 more. Mileage is 100km, a excellent choice with fuel pricing still over $1.20/L.
The Subaru Impreza is the nicest of the bunch to drive but not sporty, and the only one with AWD. It would be my pick for SW Ontario and the snow squalls that frequent the area, but would be among the most expensive in Canada due to the importer. Get the MT if she can drive one. Unfortunately you can't get the Eyesight safety feature without a CVT.
The '19 3 is the best driver, but the 2020 version being introduced this spring is smoother and less sporty.
The Kia Soul has the funkiest styling , and is a good driver, and a good value
The Golf is a great car, but expensive to maintain. Get the MT if she can drive one.

I'd look seriously at the Impreza, Corolla, and Prius with an out the door budget of CAD28-29K (inc HST)
Look at the Yaris and Soul for a budget of >CAD26K

I can testify the last generation Kia RIO is a wonderful little car as an urban runabout if your drives are less than an hour. If you could find a 2016 or 2017 EX or SX at a fire sale price worth thinking about. I would not go for the new Mexican built version. Nothing wrong with Mexico, but not a fan of the design, look, and what they changed.
