Longshoreman Strike - East and Gulf Coast - now features TP shortages

I used to work with a former LEO who had worked much of his life around the docks of Los Angeles. I still remember him telling me that the unionized dock workers were probably the laziest workers he'd ever encountered.

I love how this spokesperson ‐‐ who sounds like a wise guy for Gotti -- is screaming about making Americans feel the pain right now as part of our nation is in dire need from flooding.

If you haven't heard the audio clips of this jerkwad, check it out.

People are entitled to fair pay and to unionize, but you don't have to be smug and excited about making your own nation suffer further.

My buddy is a longshoreman down in Texas. The way he talked about his work is the same, work for a few hours then sleep in the cargo hold of a ship for the rest of the day.

I wonder who else is affected by this; not like the public is already feeling the pinch of increased prices all around, only time before the lack of east coast shipped products trickles down to the rest of the country. After a hurricane is probably not a smart time to start either.

I'm wondering if they'll actually think the hurricane was fortunate timing for them, thinking port officials will cave quickly due to the dire need for supplies at the moment.

This guy did more damage to these unions than all bad union leaders combined.
Oh yeah, he also:
- Made last year $900,000
- Has Bentley.
- Just sold 76ft yacht.

What will happen? He will win short term, and then automatization will obliterate those jobs.

Organizing is about getting more $ for those in the group and thats it. If you need an attack dog to do so, so be it. It has been that way since labor laws were passed in the late 30's. I give organizers prior to that credit for getting a lot of good labor laws passed, but since then its purely about getting the most money for your group - which is 100% there right.

These ports will be automated, so they might as well get the most while they can. This is likely there last hurrah.

In the meantime - these are the companies that will "suffer". Forgive me if I don't feel too bad. Most of what comes into these ports is junk we don't need, and 75% of the containers leave empty showing how little trade is mutual.

There is no doubt that during COVID, some companies racked up huge amounts of profits and never trickled down to workers.
His problem is PR. He does not say I will cripple Walmart. He says I will cripple everyone. Well, the problem is that Walmart is the biggest employer in the US. You don't see Boeing machinists going out and threatening everyone about how they will cripple the nation. They have every right to ask for more money, IMO. Their previous CEO got a 54% raise while continuing to tank the company. But, they are negotiating. This guy seems more interested in self-promotion, and he did huge disservice to his members.

You will get no disagreement with me on his insanity and demeanor. Yes, threatening the US public is stupid and uncalled for - no matter who you are.

However he is negotiating with the USMX - which is primarily controlled by foreign interests - mainly the big shipping companies.
So it mostly makes no difference what you and I think, in regards to those negotiations.

When you buy imported goods your supporting these people, walmart, and the big shipping companies. Better to buy made in America and forget all these losers.

Even if that is possible, which is not, most items Made in America or Made in Germany, and on and on, need foreign components. It is a globalized economy. One thing is wishful thinking, another reality. I absolutely think they should go for more wages, including strike. But, I am afraid that after what this guy did, chances of getting those 77% and delayed automatization are now distant.

I have several bidets installed but I feel emasculated since I now have to sit for #1. I think my testosterone level has already dropped since the bidet installation. Lol
Go outside a couple times for a reset … 😵‍💫
(had those since working Asia in 2007) …

More or less Home Depot multiples since they peddle so much made in Korea “boxes” …
(I despise that) …

Automation was going to happen either way. He is just trying to get his one last payout. USMX will have to pay - they have no choice, and they might even promise no automation to existing ports, then they will open new automated ones anyway.

The world is de-globalizing, and fairly quickly, so there is going to be continued shipping decline anyway.

I hope this doesn't effect our Baltimore coal terminal. The bridge collapse put a hurting on us for a couple months, we actually just got back in the black again.

I got up at 5am today to grab some toilet paper and paper towels. Saw a news segment on the strike (locally) and the union leader was real jerk. Was asked if he cared about the prices increases that were impending and then went on some rant about how no one cared about them (longshoreman) until now, rambled off some BS about their conditions they want met and joked around bit. Not supporting this strike at all. If anything this strike will give the ports an excuse to go fully automated even sooner than they anticipated.

The government says no. So only your Chinese trinkets I guess. In which case I hope it lasts a very long time.

"The strike at these ports will not impact crude oil, gasoline, natural gas, and other liquid fuel exports and imports, as such operations are handled by other workers."

Florida gets most of their fuel from ships and barges. Don't know of any pipeline in Fl. They are already suffering fuel shortages.
