Longshoreman Strike - East and Gulf Coast - now features TP shortages

Great analogy
Here's (I think) another one. My works as a court reporter for the courts. I was telling her earlier, imagine if you and all the other court reporters went on strike and demanded a huge increase in pay and benefits, as well as a guarantee there will never be any kind of electronic way of taking down proceedings, no automated way to do it. Both of us know how a strike like that would turn out, and it definitely wouldn't be good for the court reporters.

I don't know how the port strikes will turn out for te workers but I cannot imagine a guarantee of no automation is acceptable or even feasible in the future. It's a pipe dream, imho. I am very curious how all this will turn out though.

I was aware this was a possibility and we would not be getting in any product. They are going to piss off a lot of truckers in my area who rely on daily port calls to earn their living.

That union leader is a thug and using Covid as an excuse? Ya my wife isn't getting a 50% raise for working through that as a nurse. I hope they do automate the ports.

“Thug” is spot on!

IN 2005, this slimeball was on trial in federal court along with another member of the ILA and Lawrence Ricci, an alleged (highly likely) member of the Genovese crime mob.

They had been indicted on mail and wire fraud charges, accused of steering union benefit contracts to firms that paid kickbacks to the Mob.

During the trial Ricci “mysteriously disappeared “ and was later found dead in the trunk of a car at the Huck Finn Diner in…….wait for it……..Union, NJ!

The jury, having clearly received the “message,” acquitted the other non-trunk residing guilty defendants.

Thug Boy was recently demanding the ILA members receive a new contract which, after six years, would boost their pay from $39 per hour to $69 per hour.

He should know all about “mo’ money.”

According to 2023 U.S. Department of Labor filings, Daggett received $728,694 as head of the ILA and a further $173,040 as president emeritus of the local mechanics local chapter of the Port of Newark.

I was looking through a list of things that come into these ports, and most are trinkets, but I was surprised by how much medical stuff comes in. A lot comes into the port of Savannah specifically for some reason?
Medline and Cardinal Health both get the majority of their outsourced goods through Charleston.

Tons of medicines and the raw materials (med ingredients) used by US pharma manufacturers come through Charleston also.

EDIT: Savannah never impacted us. It was always Charleston.

Well you know a court reporter probably makes a "certified transcript" (or similar wording) and a defense attorney (or anyone else) could object to any "new" way of doing these things. This adds friction and makes the position worth something. Same defense attorney may even argue that a slower, less qualified scab replacement worker would unconstitutionally delay proceedings as their guy has the right to a speedy trial!

I don't believe we import toilet paper (or much that's wood-based). I thought it all comes from northern states or Canada. Well, Canada would be an "import" technically or maybe not because of USMCA, but it wouldn't come in via ocean ports anyway.
There is rolls of paper for commercial print use imported- not sure how much any more.

Tentative deal in place. Current contract extended to Jan. 15. to allow time for negotiations.
Feels like they're kicking the can down the road.
Wow. So there going to work at their lower rate of pay for 3 months, so they can re-strike after Christmas and after the election when no one on earth cares, not to mention getting critical businesses to maybe shore up stock or find alternate supply lines.

These guys failed both math and negotiations 101.

Well yeah, because I could sell my house all by myself. Need strong robots to help with the stevedore work.
We been wanting to move except we have two things holding us back. #1 We can not face the actual moving process..... packing and unpacking and we must hire movers etc..... #2 We simply can not seem to find a house we like enough in any of the locations we have set sights on.

However they are fighting robotic automation that other countries already use to load and unload.
Lots of people label useless jobs that other people make money and others jealous though.
It a shame because those are some of the better paying , non professional degree type jobs left in the country/world. There was a time when those type jobs were everywhere for the taking. No more. Actually almost all of them are gone with the wind.
