Longevity of low end serpentine belt

I used the advance auto store brand cheapies on a few saturn s-series, never a problem. On the topic, Gates used to sell a "light duty" tensioner for that model. It was my jam, combined with the then-40% discounts at AA.

Lots of people replace belts way too early. Cracks across the ribs are normal and even help them flex better when inverted around smooth pulleys. If they start squealing when you turn the car off or load the power steering, you know it's time.

I think the O-reillys statement is an attempt to shame the buyer into paying more for a more profitable brand.

That all said I've gotten major brand serp belts for as little as $3 on rockauto that worked fine. If they were 10-year old surplus stock they were at least well preserved.
