Hi,

With my 2006 Hyundai Elantra.....
If I faithfully do a drain and refill with SPII every 25-30K miles, would the transmission last and run just as long as opposed to doing a full flush every 30K??
My goal is to take the Elantra to 175,000 to 200,000 miles.
Currently, at 28K, it runs flawlessly.

Thanks!

I would either flush every 30K, or drain/fill every 15K if you want to save some $$$ and still maximize trans. life

Absolutely... No doubt about it.

You will hear from others too, the BITOG recommendations would be drain/fill every 15K and flush every 30K.

A regular drain/fill is as good as a flush when it comes to preventive maintainance.

For the first flush at 30K it is especially important to drop the pan and clean out the break-in debris and the magnet.

I drain and filter change every 35-40,000 miles and never have had a transmission issue with the fluid I use. I have had several high mileage transmissions maintained that way.

Plus a good Synthetic would help the trans go longer too. I dont believe Synthetic in an engine is really necessary. But in a transmission, definitely!

I'm a believer in flushes. Drain and fills are good, but I feel better replacing most/all of the fluid. I have had two AT vehicles and no transmission problems at all. My Ranger has had flushes every 30K since new and shifts like new at 88K miles. I sold my Explorer with 158K on the original transmission and it still shifted perfectly, even with regular towing and no external trans cooler. The previous owner said he never did a thing except change the fluid, and that's all I did.

Drain and refill every 15K-18K and cal it good. staying ahead of oxidation is what is important. Flushing is used when you get behind and oxidation is out of control!

It might be able to go those expected miles by doing nothing.

Put your goal higher, 300k miles.

+1

I just dont get how syn transmission fluid will make it go longer. Syn will resist more heat thus lowering oxidation and chance of fluid burn. Their no proof syn transmission fluid will make the trans last longer. I'm just not buying it.

Might be well worth it in large truck that work like I work on, but in most daily drivers it's not needed. Plenty of good services is what extend life. Syn will allow longer drain intervals is all

You just answered your own question.

If you change it often there is no benefit to a so called "synthetic" fluid. Both ATF+4 and Dexron VI are synthetic blends, and are highly advanced fluids. They are also designed for extended service intervals.

Unless you track the vehicle, modify the [censored] out of it, or tow or some other brutal service, just follow the mfgr. severe service schedule.

You'll never hear a peep out of most modern autos.

I give up! Yes you do have a point, but for me it`s simply piece of mind.Just as some one mentioned here before,"every shift an automatic transmission makes,is one less shift" so if I can get a few hundred/thousand more shifts using Synthetic,I`m doing it.Especially with today`s metric automatic`s,their the weak link in the drive train.

All that allows for is longer drain intervals. Like said above unless you mod the [censored] out of your vehicle or tow heavy loads there is no need for syn trans fluid.

IMO, and the opinion of some notable experts on filtration, the very first pan drop and fitler change is the most important. Why not an inline trans filter (assuming your car has a "line" in which to install it), like the Magnefine or SPX.
