Logical Break-In Question

By the way, are "break-in wear particles" bigger than regular wear particles? At what size do hard/abrasive contaminants become an issue?

Isn't there quite a few UOA's that demonstrate that factory oil is also good for more than 1k?

Well, not a whole bunch of UOA from factory fill. Most people think that a UOA is not worth too much until you have 10k on the outfit.

The oil may be ok to run past 1000 miles, but with the extra metals in there, It's my sick mind why risk it? Plus we have no idea how long the oil has been in there.

I read that the engines are built anywhere from 3-9 months before the engine making it into the car. Then the car sits on the lot 3 months, you could have 1 year old oil BEFORE you drive it off the lot!

I'd rather just drive it 1000 miles, Drain and change the filter, go another 2k and do the same.

Once I make it to 3k, I go into normal OCI mode. For me thats 4-5k miles or 4 months whichever comes first. Use a good dino and get on with it.

My car sat on the dealers lot for 9 months before i bought it. I changed it at 1000 miles and am glad i did. It may not have helped, but it certainly didn't hurt, and it helped me sleep better

41,000 miles later, engine is clean as can be and i expect it to stay that way for another 100,000 or so miles. I change it every 2,500-3,000 miles myself and use dino (havoline, pennzoil, superflo, shell) or semi-synthetic motorcraft oil and a NON Fram filter.

Yaa, i know it's over-kill, but i think of it as inexpensive therapy for myself. It's something i enjoy, and since i only have 1 car, it's easy to be anal retentive about it

I changed my oil at 1500, 3000 and 5000 and not ever 5000 after that.

My girlfriends civic on the otherhand...at 5000 because of the supposed "break in" oil.

Not all debrigh goes through the filter before doing damage. The ability of the filter to catch all of the accelerated wear in particles on thier first pass is not great! Remember the filter has to flow first filter second. Often even as early as 500-600 miles if you drain your oil from a new engine into a glass jar and hold it up to the light you can see all kinds of glitter like metalic wear particles suspended in the oil.

Not all manufactures have the same level of cleanliness in their engine manufactureing process. If you compare Audi,Toyota,BMW,Diamler, and Honda break in UOA to say General Motors break-in UOA their is a huge difference in the amount of wear metals int he oil.

Now if the filter was able to catch these accelerated wear metals dureing break-in then we would not see any elavation the UOA at all.

THe greater the amount of any size wear metal in the oil the greater the chance of embeding or micro welding some of it to the engines surfaces.

The thickness of the oil film in the bearings, especially 5w30 and 5W-20 oil, is thinner than the particles the oil filter allows to pass, 20 to 30 μ. Very little wear occurs, but there might be some. I drain the original oil unless it is something special, and only Honda has that, as far as I know.
