Light Noise when cold start?

Did you read the language of the Hyundai TSB I posted in this thread? And I don't know if you own this engine but visit a Kia/Hyundai forum.. you'll find owners of every car model that has this engine (for the last 15yrs) complaining about [it]. It's a great engine easily capable of 200k+ miles but just a little noisy on start up apparently. (I have 164k miles on mine and it doesn't burn nary a drop of oil with the original timing chain - knock on wood ðŸ‘)

Hyundai says it's the timing chain tensioner taking up slack as oil pressure builds. It will stop after a few seconds, which the OP clearly states it does.

Some kind've hydraulic operated timing system maybe? Yeah I know absolutely nothing about these engines or brand. That noise would just scare the heck out of me.

Correct... the sound alarmed me too when I purchased mine and I took it into the dealership. The service mgr explained what was happening. Now on some earlier engines of this design they had a bad tensioner issue that had to be repaired but that hasn't been an issue on this engine for like 7 or 8 yrs now. I wanna say the last prod date affected was like 2012.

... and then I thought, oh crap..is my timing chain gonna fail prematurely???...¨ But so far so good... still going strong. Still have that same, cold start tick-tick-tick.

I'm so ocd about our cars that I try my hardest to listen for startup noises haha :p

I never received my EBay order on Liqui-Moly and had to reorder it elsewhere. I was out-the-purchase price because EBay only guarantees delivery, even if that delivery occurs to the same postal address two blocks away. My security cameras can see the neighbors both to my right and to my left. No package was sent to either one.

I suspect a dishonest homeowner with the same numerical address on another block, got my Liqui-Moly the first time. I checked homeowners of my address number for four different blocks. This particular homeowner would not acknowledge my doorbell ring and door / window knocks. Such is life......

Two oils that are known to quiet engines (when other oil brands failed) are Red Line and Schaeffers. If these-2 meet spec and I believe both now have an SN Plus oil available, you can try them. Dodge Ram owners that experience similar noise, have discussed these two oils before.... both here and on forums / messageboards elsewhere.

If I had that noise, I would be trying to eliminate it and not be satisfied with 'living with it".

I'm trying to locate Liqy-Moly Dealer to buy engine oil from them and other care products. I agree with the shipping situation, sometimes your shipment just won't arrive.
I'm not sure that we have Red Line or Schaeffers, The only trustworthy oils that I found are Mobil 1 (Made In France), Liqy-Mobly (Made In Germany), and Pennzoil (Imported from the USA). Other than that some local mysterious oils that have to datasheet or information online, I don't trust them.

Probably a tensioner.

Note that additives, if you DO have an engine failure, can cause warranty issues, as can using a lubricant that doesn't carry the correct approvals, even if it is just API SN. That means Redline (non API approved may not be the best choice for a vehicle under warranty. Check the language in your owner's manual to see what they say.

The engine sound is normal. I've heard it on dozens of cars that run perfectly fine, including my sister's 2009 Genesis 3.8 which is an absolute blast to drive. Lots of cars make this noise. Unless the car has been sitting for 3 months or more, there is always a film of oil coating the internal engine parts which protects them from *some* wear during cold starts, so I would just keep up with the regular maintenance and not worry about it. There is no way to prevent all wear during cold starts.
Another poster said, "If [the noise] doesn't go away in a few seconds, or if it happens under load, take it in." I agree 100%. That noise should always go away quickly after startup and never happen again until the next startup.
Your dash says "service required," I assume that's been done by now?

I think the engine is meant to be loud in the first seconds, I will wait until I find someone with the same car and we try it.

This guy explains it👇... basically at cold start the tensioner is relying on the spring for the first few seconds (hence the noisy tick tick) but as the oil pressure builds rapidly, the tensioner sucks in oil (primed) and should be (become) quiet. But yes, if the sound persists or happens at any other time it should be looked at.

When the car set for 6-10 hours and I run it, I hear light engine noise for like 3 seconds and when the oil pressure icon in the gauge cluster disappear the sound goes with it? what is that? is it the time needed for the oil to go through the whole engine compartment? is it Normal? Note: we don't have cold weather here temps are 50C (122F). The oil inside it is Mobil 1 5W-30 ESP.

Thanks,
I own a Kia Sorento LX. I bought the car new in 2007 and have always maintained the vehicle. I now have over 250,000 miles on the car and it has been the most problem free vehicle I have ever owned. When it comes to changing the oil I only use synthetic 5W20 and I only use OEM Kia oil filters. I had developed this same noise at about 220,000 miles. After doing alot of research I decided to put a new timing chain kit in it and I am glad I did. One of the chains was so stretched the hydraulic tensioner was fully extended. During my research I also found that the VVT camshaft phaser could be the cause but I eliminated that as the source by checking with a stethoscope. Lastly, now that I have passed the one quarter of a million mile mark I have started using Lucas Oil Stabilizer for low viscosity oil. I am hoping to reach 500,000 miles without any major repairs.

As I was reading I was waiting, and you didn't disappoint with the final comment about Lucas.

As the de rigueur question, why not just use an oil of a higher grade?

Which M1 is the made in France version?

My truck does the same thing it has the hydraulic lash adjusters in it but it shortly goes away unless it’s really cold then it takes a little bit longer.

Lucas is bad, mkay?

The non-additized Lucas goop is not going to aide in that endeavour.

I "appear" to be a drop, stop, and run type of poster beacuse I work full time and therefore I don't sit at my computer all day making false accusations about other posters.
