How long would you guys run Motorcraft Semi Syn 5w20? I'm all highway miles in my Toyota Tacoma v6. If it can go 5k, it would save me some cash.

Semi syn and highway miles should give you more than 5k miles. Dino can do that.

5k miles is a good start, and with UOAs at the end of the OCI, you will see if you can extend it from there.

5k easily. If you are running mostly highway miles, you might consider stretching to between 6500 to 7000 mile intervals. A worth while investment would be a UOA 5000 miles into your next cycle to see how the oil is holding up. The UOA results should give you confidence in your longer drain intervals.

The OLM in our Ford escape specs 5-20. I'm sure they'd like us to put Motorcraft in it. OLM usually shoots for a 10k OCI with casual driving. 4qt sump (?? no more than 5) in that 4-banger.

That scares me, so now it gets PP 5-20 for the full OCI.

I ran 7500 mile OCI on dino 5-20 for a while in our I-4 accord. Did fine.

I am using the MC 5-20 synth blend in my 05 accord 4 cyl right now. Last oil change i went 7,000 miles, i plan on doing the same with the MC.

I run it for about 5k in my Aviator, it only see's short trips and take 6 months to rake up 5k.

5k and save the uoa money. Sniff the dipstick periodically(I'm not kidding) to see if the oil smells increasingly like gasoline; which would indicate fuel dilution and an early change.

6 moths or 5k and forget about it other than a check to see if it is consuming. If the oil level stays stable for you.. just run it and forget it.

agree with all of the above. Only additional point I'd like to make is: if you stretch the OCI to the max, there's always some of that 'stretched' oil left in the motor-so I wouldn't push it till the end

I just got back a UAO from Blackstone Labs yesterday on my sample of Motorcraft Synth Blend 5W-20. After 5660 miles in a 2007 Toyota RAV4 (2.4L I-4), the results were very good. All of the wear metals read at, or just below, average levels for a 4,600 mile OCI. TBN was 1.0. The lab concluded my engine could handle 6,500 mile OCIs with this oil.

Here were the actual results:

Elements (ppm)

Aluminum: 3
Chromium: 0
Iron: 10
Copper: 2
Lead: 1
Tin: 1
Molybdenum: 50
Nickel: 0
Manganese: 0
Silver: 0
Titanium: 0
Potassium: 1
Boron: 50
Silicon: 23
Sodium: 7
Calcium: 2483
Magnesium: 13
Phosphorus: 798
Zinc: 1001
Barium: 0

Properties ("Should be" values in parens)
SUS Viscosity @ 210F: 51.5 (46-57)
cSt Viscosity @ 100C: 7.72 (6.0-9.7)
Flashpoint: 420F (>355F)
Fuel % Antifreeze %: 0.0 (0.0)
Water %: 0.0 (0.0)
Insolubles % 0.3 ( TBN: 1.0

When I got the results, I emailed the lab and asked them how they could recommend extending the OCI with a TBN that low. I haven't received a reply yet.

In any event, I am not planning on extending the OCI much beyond the 5K in Toyota's service schedule.

How long was the oil in service for? Also, could you please post this in the Used Oil Analysis section? Thanks!

One thing to consider is that there are differnt TBN testing methods. Blackstones always read lower than many of the other popular labs and they consider 1 to be a safe cutoff. Personally since I no longer try to extend beyond the factory recomendations I no longer take a TBN. 6 monts or 5k . 10 dollars for TBN can go a long way to pay for the next oil change.

The oil is not acidic.....the TBN is low but not yet depleted so there is still base materials left to neautralize the acids produced! Besides Blackstone told him he could go further.
