Just picked up an ecotec cavalier. Small little engine package. Do you get rust there? The malibu/ classic from 2004 ish does not seem to be aging well here with rust poking through by the gas filler and other places.

uhhhh type cars? For your budget, what do you expect?

You want as uhhhhh and poor-value holding a vehicle as possible, so that you can get as low a mileage and well maintained car as possible.

Someone on here got a k car with like no mileage for no money.

Id be looking for a grandma's 89 taurus that has 53k miles on it and was dealer kept.

I got my E30 BMW for $3k 10 years ago, and 75k miles later, the only thing that Ive had to do on it that was going bad was a wheel bearing and a cat converter.

like the cavaliers are junk they rattle and rust. i agree with buying a basic car but i think buying the best for your money is the smartest thing to do. i could be wrong and am open to oinions. but i want to buy a car i like and will last awhile. a focus would be fine a corolla or civic another saturn.... maybe. i feel like hyundai's are good values as well. i just dont like the cavaliers or Tauruses not really a fan of malibus and such either. i prefer cars with sticks.

All my 3800 power cars have been very good and easy to maintain.
Resale on the GM stuff will be low so you can find good examples of 3800 powered cars for under 5000 bucks all day long (Regal, Impala, Riviera, Grand Prix, Le Sabre, Bonneville, Monte Carlo, LSS and I am forgetting stuff) I paid 4800 for my Supercharged Regal with 63000 miles on it. I did eventually have to do the intake gasket, but I am now at about 110,000 and that is all I have done (well I did do brakes and tires). It gets decent MPG for a bigger family mover even though I put a smaller supercharger pulley on it, added larger injectors, did a dyno tune and few other small odds and ends. With that stuff done the car has ticked off a few 13.8 1/4 mile passes. Not too bad for a car I have about 5500 bucks in. One thing I like about the car is no timing belt to worry about and except for no drain plug on the tranny and the power steering pump being hard to get at it
is very easy to maintain. The power steering and tranmission maintenance are not real frequent so are not really an issue for me.

Plenty of decent cars out there. You just have to decide what will work best for you.

Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix.
Same car, the vibe just has some random GM parts thrown in that fail more readily than their toyota counterparts (primarily the HVAC system, esp the blend door motor. the Gm part is a [censored] design, the toyota models use an entirely different system)

Parts abound(It's basically the Corolla wagon, so many corolla parts from similar vintages bolt right up), just not turning up in junkyards in large numbers as of yet.

even the POS one my buddy has, with all it's problems,(mainly from hurried repairs of a previous accident) it was still returning upper 20's(IIRC ~27MPG) when he was delivering pizzas with it in a large city.

I thought you were going to be buying something for your wife to drive and for your growing family? What does you wife prefer? Rule #1: Make the wife happy, then you will be happy.

I agree with buying something with poor resale and great service history/reliability. Corolla or Civic will carry a higher price for what you get. One reason I ended up getting a Saturn. A stripped down Corolla was a lot more than a fully loaded Saturn...

she doesn't drive much so she said she would be happy with the saturn i drive a lot so a lower mileage vehicle would be great.
i like my saturn but something a little less cheap feeling would be great. i like my saturn overall just wish the dash design was better and less mid evil looking lol. i really hate the idea of driving a chevy or pontiac. the whole bail out thing i would prefer anything else. i do think the 3800 is a good engine though. wish there were nice midsize car low maintenance with a 5 speed.

But you drive a Saturn you know GM stuff? Bail out aside you are buying used. Who cares? Most of the 3800 cars are low maintenance. Guess it depends on what you think is nice. I felt my 98 Regal was just as nice as some of the Japanese imports from that time period. Just depends one what you like or what you are used to.

i accept saturn because well GM ditched them. Saturn is about the only GM im ok with owning. bad thing is every american car i have driven is very uggg like the grand am and prix the taurus they are so boring and numb. it would a very boring drive. i could get the 3800 with a supercharger but that's not necessary for what i need.

Pretty good, I thought there was few years that had a Headgasket problem, but that I do believe that was on 2.5 powered cars. Hopefully a Subaru person chimes in.

OK cool...

One thing I love about my Saturn is the dash design. One of the only cars I can sit in and clearly see everything. I guess coming from the Pinto era, it is a luxury sedan. Buying a car with a cassette player was high on my list, so I am not your modern buyer.

It seems you know what you want, you just have to find it.

i wish it was a one piece design. so it didnt rattle as much. and the area where the stereo is. i feel like that whole thing was an after thought lol.

Keep in mind nearly any GM product you'll find in your price range, will be an "old GM" Product (Pre-bailout)

I can kinda understand your feelings towards the bailouts,(though i don't have them myself) as for a while you'd See hundreds of sweatshirts around here with the Ford Logo, and "made without taxpayer dollars" printed on them (we have the engine plant that makes the Duratec 3.5l, and was previously home to Vulcan 3.0l Production)

just read a story the other day that Ford Borrowed 5.9Billion around that same time,(Not a bailout) saying it was for r&d in Hybrids, & Alt. Fuels,etc.. that they have yet to pay back, where as GM & Chrysler HAVE paid back a good chunk, if not most of their bailouts.

and again i recommend the Vibe/Matrix. Essentially Corolla Wagon/hatchback. the vibe is 90+% toyota. Built in Cali. @ the Nummi plant, a GM/Toyota Co-venture, also home to the Previous Gen. Corolla, and it's twin, the Geo/Chevy Prizm.
And since the plant's Closure with the demise of the Pontiac brand, that Facility has been Purchased by Tesla for their Production.
