Good question. I had a 2006 3.0R and it was very good. Had it for 7 years and gave it to my son who drove it another 7 years! The only issue was the transmission became a little quirky after about 6 years or so. Nothing broke but sometimes it would hold a gear way too long before shifting. I think that particular transmission had known issues.
Some of the newer ones have had oil consumption issues and then there's the head gasket leaks on some of them in certain years, but I think both of those things have been resolved.
Starting in 2020 the outback has a new 2.5 engine and I haven't heard of those issues so far. I think the Forester may have gotten that engine in 2019 as well. Durability, reliability and longevity are important to me so I always try to research as much as I can before buying. Maybe the jury is still out on the newest cars, but overall I think Subaru is still a quality brand that has a reputation to protect so i would hope they did some good engineering and design work to rectify those issues.

That is one thing that bothers me. Of course I take great care of my vehicles but look at the first year of the Ascent...
Not so good

Still like the Subaru although I don't understand the long term issues
