These guys from our kitchen window.

Sorry about the sarascenas fuzzing up the bottom half of the pic, but didn't want my enormous shadow upsetting them.

Same species, the green blotched one is an adolescent.

that doesnt look like the banded waters snakes in north central NC at all..plus the pine needles threw me off. yeah they are very tempermental. i steped on one in my waders fly fishing one day and i swear he struck me 5 times in one second. oh man i am glad i am young bc if i was older i would have had a heart attack

technically its the Eastern Banded Water snake correct? the ones we have up here can get that dark but most look like a mix between a copperhead and a watermoccasin. i think they call it the northern banded water snake but the 2 can interbreed.

some banded watersnakes have bands that are less apparent. Most of the ones I've seen look very much like water moccassins.
Is Shannows bird a lorikeet?

I caught one(after almost stepping on it) in Wilmington and he looked almost like this one, but very dark. He was also very ill-tempered and strong.
Is that other snake a chicken snake?

no not a chicken snake (unless thats the slang name for something else) we dont call them that around here.. i went to school in wilmington (uncw.. i live and grew up in burlington between greensboro and chapel hill.. i love this area.

the snake is VERY common in the south east US

another hint.. its a juvenile snake. (note most juvenile snakes do not look like the full grown snakes color and maybe pattern wise too) ---- just gave it away lol..

I also went to UNCW, and had many friends around Burlington and GB, as well as Chapel Hill and Raleigh.
How about a pic of the adult snake. Unless it's a rat snake?

ok here is the answer

its a juvenile black RACER.. look at the head and the size of the eyes. the head is long and slender where as the Rat black snake looks a little different..

Right across the lake, and the reason for the move,--like many other questionable things I've done--was a woman.

A Black Racer! I should've known.
I'm still wondering about Shannow's rooftop buddies.

what do you do for a living marc?

btw here is another one.. found all along the SE. its more common than you think bc most of the time they are hidden in holes.

That's Mark with a K.
I worked at Corning for 15 years. Here I used to work for Honeywell, making accelerometers and such things, worked on sensors for JDAMS kits, and guided drill bits.
Now I work at a small biotech company.
That's a corn snake.
