Hi guys, as you can see I am new here and trying to learn all the ins and outs about oil. Hoping some of you seasoned veterans can put me on the right path :)

I recently did a oil change with Pennzoil Ultra and I am very impressed with how much better the car runs. I know that it is a GF-5 oil and was wondering if any other oil manufactures are making GF-5 oils yet that I could compare Ultra to, or if Ultra is currently the only one.

Also, a friend of mine told me that Mobil 1 was better than Ultra based on the fact that Ultra uses a group 3 base. I can't seem to wrap my head around his reasoning. Does anyone think he is right?

Both are excellent products. Do not concern yourself with base oil content.

Many have their preference as to which oil they LIKE for whatever reason. Many times it is simply extensive experience with a brand.

If Ultra works for you, then use it.

IMO, it's still too early to compare Ultra to anything. But the VOA's put it in the league of M1 EP, better than regular M1. Is he right? Depends and we'll see.

You like it is all matter. PU is as good as any synthetic oil you can buy at WM or at any auto parts store.

Ultra is the only one right now but more are certainly coming.

Hogwash.

First, there is a lot of evidence that Mobil 1 uses group III base stocks in many of its grades.

Second, modern group III base stocks can be as good as or better than what your friend thinks Mobil 1 is made of.

Third, OVERK1LL's comments are dead on the money. Performance counts, and that's what you're paying for. Since we are not formulators here, the details are really just interesting (or boring) conversation pieces. Saying one oil performs better than another based on what it's made of is like saying one car is faster than another based on the fact that it is turbocharged.
