so nextel had communicator type phones 10 years ago that you could conference people in with single buttons; those were much more analogous of what S.T. had.

As usual great tech was bought up and placed on the shelf next to the 100mpg carbuerator .

I still have my mother's lil lg fip from net 10 but looking to upgrade to a better flip. Anti-Smart I suppose I am

I like flip phones. They don't accidentally dial out when stored in your pocket. They are easier to answer and to hang up--flip, flip. Mechanical action is always better than touch screen.

TallPaul, best post I've read in a long time. I agree 100%

True, Kirk was using a flip phone. But he was using it back in the 1960's.

That being said, I got a flip phone for my mom for all the reasons TallPaul mentioned in his post.

Is this an anti-flip phone rant or what? I'm lost....must be because I'm over 50.

I have a flip phone. Many people want to know why I have an old style flip phone from Tracfone when I could get a smart phone. They often laugh at me when they see me making a call. I just smile and rhetorically ask them if they like my expensive, "high tech" device. I have one because it is cheap, doesn't have 673 different functions I have no use for, and I can carry it without looking like I have a clipboard in my pocket.

Truth is...I DESPISE smart phones. They are a huge annoyance and burden in my opinion. Big, clumsy, and you look like a goofball with your cranium bent forward, fingers flailing as you text/scroll through meaningless messages. Life is OUT THERE....not in that silly little device people carry around like pacifiers.

I carry a cheap flip phone only for emergencies or if I am expecting a call I do not want to miss. I don't need to see Facebook every five minutes....no tweeting....no useless text messages or beeping, jingling, bells or whistles to annoy me. I really don't know why people like that stuff. It's as though they haven't a brain anymore and need a smart phone to guide them through the next fifteen minutes of life. Weird. So dependent.

My girlfriend has an iPhone. Giant screen...does everything but make you a latte (maybe it can...I don't know). She seems to like it, yet I can see when she is getting stressed from so many emails, texts, FB messages, tweets...whatever. She can't seem to turn it off sometimes. I let her know that I will not compete with that stupid thing and if it interrupts ONE discussion we are having....I will throw it in the nearest lake.

Anybody remember pay phones and a dime or two? Those days when nobody bugged you while you where out and about?

Proud flip phoner here!!!

In fact, I have data blocking.... you can't text me!!!
If you have the phone in your hand to text, just push send and talk....much more personal.

Generally when I use my phone its hooked up through the truck anyway.

Having a "smart phone life" was once described to me as akin to having a 12 volt battery connected to your nuts. I still remember bringing up the idea of our sales group getting cell phones in the late 80s. "Ohh H*** No, we don't want the regional manager calling three times a day to see where we are". Ahh, those were the days.

If you don't want or have the need for a more functional touchscreen phone, then I have no idea why there's a disdain for flip phones. I guess they can't make fun of the big walkie talkie cell phones of years ago since that's too archaic...so now flip phones have taken their place.

If you want to make/receive phone calls and like the idea of a battery that will go a week or two between charges then a flip-phone works well.

If you pay attention to advertising and follow instructions than a flip-phone just won't do.

If you don't follow instructions you'll be left behind, ostracized, singled out for ridicule, left to your own devises and most likely be responsible for your own welfare. Imagine the shame of it all, reduced to a outcast among the "in-crowd".

Are we long lost twins?., or have you hacked into my life and taken me over without me noticing?. I absolutely agree with everything you wrote.
It seems to be humans are forgetting there is a real world to be enjoyed out there somewhere.

I couldn't agree more. I loved my flip phone(s), and had one up until last year. But I finally got fed up with how much I was paying T-Mobile for the monthly service, and found a provider with much cheaper smartphone service. I was never a fan of smartphones, but grudgingly tried it out. I now use my smartphone for texting (which is much easier than on a flip phone) as well as checking email. I'm still not a fan of the way most people obsess over their smartphones, but I have to admit my smartphone serves me well. That said, I would never make fun of someone who had a flip phone. The battery on mine eemed to last forever and the call quality was always great. Long live flip phones... and telegraphs, and horse and buggies too!

Flip phones were very comfortable to talk on, but the power and amount of information available at your fingertips with a smartphone is amazing. It's a very powerful tool I appreciate having.

All I know is I've dropped my Motorola Barrage flip phone from heights a smart phone could only dream of falling w/o damage. It's small reliable, and not a power hog. For my current needs it is perfect.

Oh god, 2000 is calling.

I have not had a flip phone since the Iphone came out. But I guess if you don't use the tool why bother having it.

I have a "candy bar" phone!

It does what I need it to, it has great sound quality (unlike a LOT of smart phones), durable, and can't be destroyed by
viruses and malware, and it is a quality product from Samsung.
Cost 5$ brand new with tracfone. Also you don't get screwed using the thing on the internet with all those caps.

I'm not saying that smart phones don't have a good use, but these shallow idiots mocking folks for not being interested in buying and using them is stupid.

I still use and prefer a flip-phone. I don't text anyway, plus i hate touch screens. I am on call often, and i can't deal with a phone that has to be charged every day, i can't risk forgetting just once to charge it and miss an emergency call.

I agree the technology and power of the smart phone is amazing, i just don't have the need for it. For those that do, i'm sure its a time saver.

We agree on SO little, but the above is one of those glaring exceptions, and I could NOT have stated it any better myself!

Except to add that sadly, they are considered so requisite to life nowadays that you see ads/advice which states "you can scan it on your smart/iPhone".
Thus making the ASSUMPTION that IF you are currently living in this country, you MUST MUST have one of these devices in order to even survive, let alone be "hip" or "cool".
