Open question for all:

Who exactly comprises the universe of posters at BITOG? Does every poster here have technical background? Are we all chemists and automotive engineers?

Or, is the BITOG universe composed of all the above PLUS many everyday shade tree mechanics, DIY's and just curious Joes?

It's hypocritical to suddenly get all snobbish about PF, while every day Joes freely post with abandon here. Seems to me you welcome everyone's input, OR, you can exclude and prohibit all "non technical" members from posting here. That would probably eliminate 60-70% of BITOG content BTW, just a wild guess. All I am saying is be fair, hold PF to the same standard (and freedom) everyone else operates under.

I’m not snobbish about PF at all. I’m pointing out that the oil tests he performs are useless from a technical sense. He doesn’t know what he’s doing and he’s drawing conclusions based on data that isn’t able to support any such conclusion.

And I’m being fair. Some of his other tests are fine. Just not this.

Interesting question I've thought of myself at times. There are certainly all types. I recognize in my daily browsing/reading here a dozen or so posters that post often and what I would consider subject matter experts either through formal training/education or real world hands on experience. Some are helpful, others are, well, more than likely here for personal validation gleaned through how condescending they can be. You also have folks, like myself, who don't have a super deep granular understanding of the science or statistics involved in motor oil, but have read and posted a bit to see patterns and have a base level understanding of what makes something good or bad. You also have a large number of people that merely want to know "what is the best oil for ________" and tune out once they can't receive a simple answer of "Brand X is scientifically proven to work the best in all engines and all situations".

I would think that for many (most?) people here, LSJr's videos are a great source of knowledge. Maybe it's like being taught 1st grade arithmetic to the subject matter experts, but for everyone else I think it's pretty good. I haven't heard him say something so off the wall that I was taken aback and unsubscribed; I have done that to a great number of YouTubers that I've listened to over the years.

I don’t think it’s a direct comparison at all. Someone making YouTube videos, especially ones with huge followers, should have some sort of expertise since they have a much bigger audience than someone posting in here. Too many people take what PF says as gospel when many of his videos are pure nonsense.

Nope. People post millions of YT videos from the frivolous "My Fluffy is the cutest cat ever!" to stupid things like this:


There is hardly any "expertise" in the vast majority of YT. Most are for entertainment only. In fact, some of the stupidest things on YT have crazy high views. Audience size is profoundly irrelevant.

Besides, are you somehow claiming we at BITOG must be "protected" from PF because we are too stupid to make up our own minds about what we might see? PF does a GREAT job of disclaiming its just his observations, and nothing more. Personally I don't need you to "gatekeep" PF away from me. Once again, if everybody is welcome here, then PF should be too. Otherwise BITOG needs to screen out all non technical posting and posters, period. Lets be fair.
