Lack of common sense while driving in snow

I live on a steep hill and it's a bit treacherous when it snows, but it's totally manageable unless there's like 2 foot of snow. There's a girl in my neighborhood with a nice Grand Am GT and her cars been stuck in front of my house for 2 days now. It's got Goodyear Tripe Treds. She just floors it thinking that's going to get it unstuck. She had this thing bouncing off the rev limiter the night she got it stuck, scraping up the fenders along the curb. So I went out this morning, while she was making a 3rd attempt to get it home, and told her to back down the hill to one of the cross streets, get a good bit of momentum, and act like there's an egg under the throttle and keep that momentum up without making the tires spin. She sailed up the hill like it was nothing! She came back down to thank me at least. She's pretty cute; this might get me a date!

I see people do that all the time. Wheel spin doesn't equal traction on snow!

Nicely played, Drew!

I hear you, the lack of training of some people is astounding. I think our modern cars with ABS and traction control (along with lack of training) inspire such confidence that some people feel invincible.

For your enjoyment from a recent storm down in your neck of the woods...

I don't know how things work in Colorado Springs, but the first step to getting a date around here isn't making an internet post about a girl not having common sense.

A nice compliment works much better.

Get after it!
Just don't let her drive your car!

Thanks Bill, I was just coming back here after I searched around to figure out how to embed the link.

Probably where the snow plows were.....PARKED. This city is beyond screwed; they can't even afford to keep the street lights on.

I thought in Canada you bought em' a Beer Eh?! Drew99 did her a solid and helped her out-that is the important part of the story. And it sounds like she does not have common sense-so what? Does cold weather make people more critical of others. He helped and obviously no one else did! Time to sit down and watch 'Strange Brew' tonight I think.

I think she's a bit out of my age range........on the young side. I kind of feel bad; she's upset about the scrapes on the fenders. It was some fairly violent driving she done did! I was sitting at my computer and all of a sudden I hear vrooom vroooom vrooooooooooooooooom and other scraping noises combined with massive wheel spin. Actually it was very entertaining to watch!

I thought I had it timed out to where I wouldn't have to stop going uphill to turn right at the next street. The car coming saw me plodding up the snow and ice covered hill and slowed way down. Blew up my timing and interval so I had to stop. That's kinda' my fault.

I expected the other driver to maintain the same speed through the intersection but he didn't.

In the meantime, a Ford Escape pulls up right behind me. I mean right behind me. I release the brake, the car does not move and the Traction Control Light comes on.

Great. Now I'm stuck. I put the car in reverse. No response from Escape driver. She's still right behind me. I tell her, "Back up! This hill is too steep and icy. We gotta' hit it with some momentum..."

She just gives me that horsehead look...you know, where they squint their eyes and jut their front teeth out like a horse.

"Back up!" I plead in vain.

Finally horsehead rolls her window down. "Go forward."

It took some doing but I was finally able to get enough momentum to make my turn. Gawd only knows how much wear and tear I put on my transmission rocking back and forth on a two foot area.

So I look back as I drive away. There's Horsehead and her Escape still in the same place I left her. Her's is not an AWD model. The front tires and only the front tires are madly spinning at 100mph.

I dont think a Escape will go 100mph... But at least her little tonka toy will be in the shop in a week for a new tranny.

Automatic suck in snow, I will say that much if you get stuck. A stick is easy to rock out compaired to autos, I find my self in 2+ deep snow nearly daily in a open rear f150 and I have little too no problem plowing through it.

My neighbor was trying to pull his lowered Civic from its spot last night by revving the snot out of it. I pulled my car forward to give them enough room to pull straight forward for a ways, then stood back to watch. They kept on flooring it with the wheel cranked hard to the left. After a couple minutes, I told them that I'd drive if they pushed. Hopped in, straightened the wheel, and gently drove it free.

I did spin the Fit's tires getting up an icy hill with a truck riding my bumper. We had the momentum going and didn't want to lose it by letting off. Cars were everywhere in that slop.
