Kiddo passed the driver's test today

I agree 100%
Vocalizing comes in handy in many situations in life.

Example: Lift on 3 ... 1,2,3 ....lift
Probably the best tip anywhere for passing the test is to vocalize everything. "I am reversing, looking out my rear glass." "I am stopped, but checking distance to the bumper with my backup camera." Modify to your particular state's peculiarities.
In California you are not allowed to speak during the test at all.

In the state of Texas they doc you if you use back up camera.

Sadly the DMV is slow at adopting changes. The camera’s are mandated now on any newer vehicles and get recall notices if they have issues for safety reasons.

In the DPRM (arguably the nation’s worst drivers) if the car has a backup screen it has to be covered for the test! And you have to turn around.
Those states are ignorant. While I know the old folk will shake their canes about using back-up cameras, they're required by law in the US on cars for what, a decade now ? Yes, I know plenty of cars don't have them but to forbid them is stupid. With our most recent kid getting their license, we had been told that one DMV location makes you cover it while another doesn't ! We went to the one that allows it (not for that reason - it's closer, less busy, etc) and our daughter asked about it. Instructor said, "you've got it, use it !"

My car doesn't have a back-up camera and the view out the rear-view mirror is 100% useless so I do depend on my side mirrors. When I drive my wife's car(s) and use the mirrors mostly, my wife always asks why I don't use the camera. I do use the camera at the end in order to get close enough to what I'm backing up towards.

Who in the world turns around and looks out the back while backing up? Maybe I’m just ignorant on that but I’ve never seen anyone do that. I was always taught by my dad and my drivers ed class to back with mirrors and backup camera if equipped. Back with mirrors was always the biggest thing they would remind us of. But either way congratulations on her passing the test.
what? Most people I know back up by putting their right arm on the passenger seat and looking in the back, I back up significantly better than a backup camera...

I don't observe how the average joe back up their car so I wouldn't know.

This.
I own four vehicles and only one has a backup camera, and I look back on that on that one like I do the other three.
Checks/balances/force of habit, and all that stuff.

Plus, you can give your back a nice stretch while doing so.

I look at it this way. All these sensors and cameras these vehicles have. Just means more stuff to go wrong. Paying attention is vital. It’s a lost art. I survived without that stuff when I learned to drive.

Missouri is listed as Yes (I was so asked to do it, I said no (as I know I would still pass), and they deducted 5 or whatever points from the total and I still passed my driver's license exam, I only had a total of 30 minutes of practice before my test)
